Tree saving apps sponsored by Invasive Alien Species

Rating: Apple provides fast turnaround for iOS version

It seems that AshTag – the organisation which is backing Britain’s efforts to track and stop the spread of the Ash tree dieback disease in the UK, can move fast when it comes to smartphone apps. See our previous story ‘A smartphone app may help to save Britain’s Ash trees’ here. The organisation says it has only a short window of opportunity to help identify the spread of the disease before Winter sets in. After that identification of diseases becomes more difficult. Hence the organisation has been grateful for the help it received from Apple. It now has both iOS and Android versions of its smartphone app.AshTag says, “We’re delighted to announce that Apple approved the AshTag iPhone app overnight and it is now available for immediate download.”

iOS user can either search for ‘ashtag’ on the Apple iTunes App store, or go here.

The Android app is already available on Google Play (formerly Android Market ) here.

It seems a version specifically for the Nexus 7 tablet is also under development.

You can also manually upload photos taken with other smartphones – such as BlackBerries, or on digital cameras to Ashtag.org.

The Google app at least appears to have been developed by Kieran Marron of Kieranties on behalf of the IAS.

When the web site said IAS stood for Invasive Alien Species, for a moment GoMobile News thought it was a body interested in UFOs, but of course it is about plants which damage the UK’s ecosystem.

The Android and iOS apps are very basic – but that’s not meant as a criticism, it merely reflects the urgency of the situation.

Basically there are two options in the app: – ‘Add a sighting’ and ‘Identification Guide’. The latter has photos of infected Ash trees.

The Add a sighting facility enables you to send photos to Ashtag. GoMobile News would urge contributors to turn location awareness on when they take these photos.

AshTag probably can process that data right now but it could prove highly useful to the organisation at a later date.

On our trusty Motorola RAZRi Android smartphone, we opened the camera app; touch the settings icon and checked the box which said ‘Turn on geo-tagging’.

AshTag must be doing something right because the Android app received circa 1,000 downloads in 24 hours.

You can follow the organisation’s progress via the Ashtag website here or by following them #AshTag on Twitter.

Microsoft unveils Windows Phone 8

Latest smartphones from Nokia, Samsung and HTC go on sale in November

Press release (US Version)

October 29th 2012. Microsoft has debuted Windows Phone 8, the latest version of the company’s smartphone operating system. Windows Phone 8 offers a truly personal phone experience, connecting you to the people and things that matter most. As part of the announcement, Microsoft revealed new features, including Kid’s Corner and Rooms, along with details and pricing for a range of beautiful new smartphones from Nokia, Samsung and HTC, each with their own differentiated designs, colours and features. Windows Phone 8 devices will go on sale in November at in the USA as well as at carriers and retailers around the world. “We can’t wait for the world to meet Windows Phone 8, the most personal smartphone there is,” said Terry Myerson, corporate vice president of the Windows Phone Division at Microsoft.

“Windows Phone 8 comes on a range of phones that are stunning, colourful and unique.”

Most personal smartphone

Live Tiles are the heart and soul of Windows Phone, and no other phone has them. People can arrange the iconic Start screen however they want by pinning their favourite people, apps, music, games, photos and more.

Three sizes of Live Tiles and 20 bright colour choices including cobalt, crimson and lime mean you can personalise your Start screen to be unmistakably yours.

In addition to Live Tiles, Windows Phone 8 offers a range of new features to make your smartphone experience even more personal, including these:

The only phone with Live Apps. Live Apps bring information right to the Start screen, such as the Groupon deal of the day, flight information and news headlines.

With Windows Phone 8, Live Apps such as Facebook can even deliver real-time information right to your lock screen with updated wallpaper.

Top apps. The Windows Phone Store has 120,000 apps to choose from, with hundreds added every day and hits coming this holiday, such as ‘Angry Birds Star Wars,’ ‘Cut the Rope Experiments,’ ‘Disney’s Where’s My Water,’ ‘LivingSocial,’ ‘Temple Run,’ ‘Urbanspoon’ and many more.

Microsoft has announced that Pandora, the leading Internet radio service, is coming to Windows Phone in early 2013 with one year of ad-free music.

Kid’s Corner. Exclusive to Windows Phone 8, Kid’s Corner is a worry-free way to share your phone with your kids, so they can play “Angry Birds” without texting your angry boss.

Parents can now hand over their phones to the kids without worrying about deleted photos, misdirected emails, unapproved purchases or accidental phone calls.

After a simple setup, parents can activate a specialised place on the phone for kids to play — complete with their own customisable Start screens — where they can access only the apps, games, music and videos picked by parents.

Rooms. Sometimes you want to share and chat with one group, not your entire social network. Rooms allow you to create private groups of people who have Windows Phone 8 — like your family members best friends or fantasy football league — and easily connect with just them.

Chat, share calendars, shopping lists or photos in an ongoing conversation where only those invited can join in. You can share some aspects of Rooms with friends and family on other smartphones as well.

Data Sense. This new feature helps you surf more and do more — without worrying about going over your data limit. Data sense helps conserve your data allowance by compressing Web images, deferring data tasks to free Wi-fi and automatically adjusting your usage as you get closer to your plan limits.

Data Sense also shows how much data is used per app. As you approach your limit, Data Sense notifies you so you can get the most out of your plan. Data Sense will roll out to select mobile operators this holiday and additional partners next year.

in the USA, Verizon will be the first to offer Data Sense

Wallet and near-field communications. Windows Phone 8 brings together the best of new wallet technologies, including payments via near-field communications (NFC).1

The Wallet can also store your debit, credit, loyalty and membership card information on your phone.

Always-on, premium Skype experience. With the new Skype app, coming soon to Windows Phone 8, you can make and receive Skype calls just like a regular phone call.

Simply tap a friend or family member’s contact card in the People Hub, or just pick up when the phone rings. Skype is always on and available so you can choose how to connect with people.

Stunning Phones

Leading up to the launch, Nokia, Samsung and HTC have announced an array of phones for Windows Phone 8, featuring large, vivid screens, new camera innovations, NFC capabilities, and bold colours such as red, yellow, blue, black and white.2 Each phone offers unique features and comes in a variety of price points.

Nokia. The Nokia Lumia 920 offers state-of-the-art photography that fits in your pocket, and it is the world’s only smartphone to include Optical Image Stabilization.

The Nokia Lumia 822, 820 and 810 offer a ClearBlack display and removable back exchangeable shells in a range of vibrant colours.3 Both the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 offer wireless charging.

HTC. The Windows Phone 8X by HTC was designed with sleek lines and radiant colours to match Windows Phone’s new Live Tiles. This phone also breaks new ground in optics with 1080p video recording, f2.0 aperture and a dedicated HTC ImageChip on the main 8-megapixel camera and an ultrawide-angle lens on the front camera that lets you fit up to four people in the frame for a premium Skype experience.

The 8X and its smaller sibling, the 8S, both boast a killer music experience with Beats Audio and exclusive built-in amps that pair perfectly with Xbox Music.

Samsung. The Samsung ATIV S brings the biggest screen to Windows Phone, with a bright 4.8-inch touch screen and large battery for extended battery life. Wrapped in brushed aluminium, the ATIV S balances high-end materials and technology with a hairline design and light weight. The ATIV Odyssey was announced as the latest Windows Phone from Samsung with more details to come.

Perfect companion for your Windows devices

With a similar look and feel, the same technology core, and the same built-in SkyDrive cloud service, Windows Phone 8 is built to work seamlessly with Windows 8 PCs, Microsoft Surface devices and the Xbox 360 console.

For example, now you can edit a document on the go with Windows Phone 8 and pick right up again on your PC when you get home.

Or access your music including your albums, songs and playlists, wherever and whenever on Xbox Music.4

Create a playlist from your PC, walk out the door and cue up that same list from your phone. It’s all possible with Windows.

Nokia out of top five league of smartphone vendors

Overtaken by Blackberry manufacturer RIM

Finnish manufacturer Nokia has dropped off the world’s top five list of smartphone makers for the first time, latest figures from research firm IDC indicate. It says that while the overall phone market grew 2.4 per cent in Q3 compared to the same period in 2011, it was Korea’s Samsung taking the lion’s share of sales closely followed by Apple. Handset makers shipped 444.5 million mobile phones during the three months with, perhaps surprisingly, Canada’s Research in Motion beating Nokia to the No.5 slot with the rest of the leading vendors made up of Taiwan’s HTC and China’s ZTE.Nokia boss Stephen Elop has closely allied the future of the company with Windows Phone 8 along with the user interface and services Microsoft is tying its products together with.

But with its Lumia smartphones so far failing to make much impression and news of the company’s latest slide down the league of top manufacturers, it doesn’t leave much room left for manoeuvre if Elop’s Windows gamble doesn’t succeed.

Comments Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker: “Nokia’s share losses have meant gains for competitors.

“The company’s transition away from Symbian-powered smartphones to ones shipped with Windows Phone has left ample opportunity for rivals to steal share away from Nokia over the past 18 months.”

But Resitvo reckons the war is not yet completely lost for Nokia. “The smartphone market is still relatively nascent which means there’s room for multiple vendors and operating systems to flourish, including Nokia,” he adds.

* One of the few bright spots for Nokia is India where, according to a study by CyberMedia Research, it came top of the vendors’ league with a 22.2 percent share of total shipments.
Some 102.4 million mobiles were sold during the first half of 2012 with sales of feature phones growing faster than smartphones, helping Nokia stay ahead of Samsung. Smartphones accounted for 5.5 million sales during the period.

Stolen phone database alive, carriers can now block pilfered handsets

By Steve Dent posted Nov 1st 2012 9:33AM US carriers agree to build stolen phone database, blacklist hot handsets

Earlier this year, all the major US carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint) huddled up with the FCC to create a stolen phone database so that they could block any renegade devices. That effort has now gone live, according to the CTIA, as the majors -- along with Cellcom and Nex-Tech Wireless -- have just deployed their bad-lists. These will allow the operators to identify poached devices through IMEI codes and stymie their activation on networks. AT&T and T-Mobile will also be adding cellphones reported stolen in the GSMA Global IMEI database to their new lists, which should bring US efforts up to snuff with a similar, successful UK program, albeit five long years later.

Waze the social sat nav app gets more features in new update

image
Yesterday Waze the free social sat nav and mapping app had a bit of an update adding more features to the app.

Here is a little animated video showing you what Waze is about.

Do you like reading press releases? Well here is today’s one.

Waze launches version 3.5 including new features for driving together

Features include real time ETAs and pick up requests

31 st Oct, London, 2012 — Waze, the first community-based traffic and navigation app for smartphones, has launched a new version boasting a range of new features including:

· Real time estimated time of arrival: see friends driving to your destination, where they have parked or share how your drive is going

· Pick up requests: no more painstakingly explaining where you are. Send a request to instantly grab a location and navigate directly there

· Facebook single sign-on: drivers can now log into Waze with their Facebook account

· Everyday convenience: information on toll roads, private messaging feature and a save your parking location function

Version 3.5 of the app, which has 28 million users worldwide, is designed to simplify everyday driving experiences by making it easier to fulfil social commitments.

Yael Elish, VP Product and Marketing at Waze, said: “We may be alone in the car, but most of the time it’s only because we’re on our way to meet others at work or at home, or out to join up with friends.

“It’s only natural to be better informed about the location and timing of those you are about to meet or pick up, and be able to share the same info back with them. With this version Waze takes drivers out of the dark, re-imagining everyday driving as a much smoother experience.”

Along with new social features, the updated app which is being released on both iOS and Android, also has built in privacy protections, letting users control which features to interact with on Waze, and letting them ‘go invisible’ to hide from the map anytime.

Waze 3.5 also has newly designed maps, moods, and interface, giving Waze a slick graphic overhaul throughout.

I spend most of the day telling people to turn stuff off and back on again. Inbetween doing that I post news and reviews over here.

I am currently using a Windows Phone, an iPhone and two Android phones. My next phone is going to be either Nokia Lumia 920 or a HTC 8X.

Samsung profits surge on back of smartphones

Sales up by more than a quarter

Korean electronics giant Samsung has returned record net profits for the third quarter amid booming smartphone sales.
In the approach to Christmas Samsung, the world’s largest technology company by turnover, expects demand for mobiles – particularly those running on LTE of 4G networks – to be further boosted, though it acknowledges there will be “stiff competition.”
Overall the manufacturer’s net profit soared 91 per cent to Won6.56 trillion ($5.9 billion), with operating profit also up 91 per cent to Won8.12 trillion and sales 26 per cent higher at Won52.18 trillion.
Even so, the company’s shares fell 2 per cent in Seoul early today [26th October 2012] amid investor concern that the widespread adoption of smartphones in emerging markets and stiffer competition from rivals could squeeze profit margins on lucrative smartphone sales.
Samsung did not disclose its smartphone shipments for Q3 but analysts claculate the company sold about 58 million units against Apple’s 26.9 million shipments of iPhones.
Samsung’s surging profits come despite its legal defeat earlier this year in a Californian court where it was ordered to pay more than $1 billion to arch rival Apple for design and patent violations.
The pair are still pitted against each other in more than 30 lawsuits on four continents.

* The blaze of publicity surrounding Apple’s latest devices led to the company recording a fall in sales of the iPad and fairly flat iPhone retail figures in Q3. In a three month period that covered just a fortnight of iPhone 5 sales and this week’s launch of the iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad, Apple sold 27 million iPhones and 14 million iPads.
Revenues of $36 billion for the three months to September 29 came in just ahead of Wall Street consensus forecasts, while earnings of $8.67 per share were just below expectations of $8.75. Quarterly net profit grew by 24 per cent year-on-year to $8.2 billion, though Apple warns that tough competition is squeezing profit margins on its devices.

Google's New "Explore Similar Artists" Feature Already Live In Play Store For Tablets

Google announced a few additions to the Play Store along with Android 4.2 and the new Nexus devices earlier this week. Among the improvements was an expansion of the music catalog and a new way to explore similar tunes. The exploration interface has been demoed a few times by Google, but it appears to already be available in the Play Store on tablets.

wm_Screenshot_2012-11-01-01-30-05

We've confirmed on several Nexus 7 tablets that the Explore Similar Artists button is right there next to the Buy button on artist pages. Tapping it opens a clean interface populated by floating circles. You can drag or tap along, following the lines of similarity from the artists you know, to those you might not. Each circle offers a brief description, preview tack, and wishlist access. The experience is very cool – it's like shuffling through a stack of physical LPs or CDs.

wm_Screenshot_2012-11-01-01-30-44 wm_Screenshot_2012-11-01-01-29-56

There's no need to wait on Android 4.2 or an updated version of the Play Store. You just need to be on a tablet (Jelly Bean may be required); the Explore button appears to be missing from phones. With the expanding music catalog, this makes Google Play that much more useful for finding new tracks.

Microsoft Surface with Windows RT – Initial Impressions

A lot has been said about Windows 8 recently. A lot of it has been negative and mainly about the metro new tiled interface. I didn’t buy into any of the negativity and when the Surface with RT tablets came up for pre-order I went ahead and ordered one.

Call me crazy or short sighted but I wanted something different from my next tablet. I have used several different Android tablets and most recently an iPad and none of them have hugely captured what I wanted in a tablet. The closest I’ve got to my ideal was my Asus Transformer Prime, which was recently updated to Jelly Bean. But the dire situation with tablet optimised apps made me sad. Using an iPad and seeing all of the glorious tablet optimised apps made me realise quite how bad the Android situation is.

So as I mentioned I pre-ordered a Surface and eventually it arrived. As there is a lot of interest around it I thought I’d do an initial impressions rather than just charge in and write a quick review.

As usual I’ll start with good and bad points

Good Points

It’s drastically different to 99% of other tablets on the marketThe build quality is amazingTouch cover keyboard is a useful additionThe fact it runs trimmed down Windows rather than souped up Windows PhoneFull size usb slotMicroSD XC slot

Bad Points

It’s expensive for what is basically an experiment by MicrosoftAccessories are expensiveApp Store is a bit of a grey area

Design

The Surface is a really nice looking piece of kit. Especially when you take a step back and realise that it’s just basically an angular slab of metal with a screen slapped on.

It has a reassuring weight to it. I like lightweight stuff but sometimes you pick something up and it feels solid. Like the iPad or my Transformer Prime. The Surface feels very solid, you could almost imagine dropping it from a height or making a skateboard out of it, oh Microsoft already did that.

Mine came with the black touch cover which in itself is a thing of beauty. With a sort of felt like finish on the back the cover feels nice when your carrying it around. When in use it’s a little odd at first but you soon get used to it.

Here are some shots of the Surface:

Hardware

The hardware in the Surface is pretty powerful, it rivals most other high end tablets on the market. That is apart from when you compare the screens, the resolution of 1300*768 to some will seem low, but Microsoft has done some wizardry on it and classed it as a “Cleartype HD” screen.

The screen is nice and bright and very clear. It might have just been the simple interface that was fooling me but web pages, maps and pictures all looked good.

Microsoft have added some smart touches to the screen and the cover. When you open the cover the screen comes on if it hasn’t gone into locked mode. Tapping the Windows button also wakes it up in a similar manner. If the screen has recently turned off just tapping the screen also wakes it up. All this sounds good, but I couldn’t replicate each situation, it’s a bit hit and miss whether it works or not.

The Surface has a selection of speakers and ports dotted around the frame, you get stereo speakers for media and two little speakers which I presume are for keyboard noise. The power and volume buttons are nice and easy to press although they are a long way apart, meaning I kept having to look to see where the button I wanted was. There is a small MicroSD XC slot hidden behind the kickstand allowing you to easily add storage to the Surface.

Speaking of the Kickstand, it doesn’t click like in the adverts when you open it, it makes a sort of click when you close it. The kickstand and the keyboard are undoubtedly the Surfaces most obvious features. Yes they are both damn useful but they also make using the Surface with both a little difficult. If you use the Surface on a solid surface then it works perfectly. Try sitting on the sofa and using it or sitting in bed. Yes it works but you’ll soon be removing the keyboard and using it like a normal tablet.

Software

Windows RT is a bit of a gamble, when I heard about it I assumed it would be Windows Phone 8 with support for much bigger screens. So it would function like iOS on the iPad or Android on a tablet. When I discovered Window s RT was a trimmed down version of the desktop OS I was excited and concerned. I was excited as no doubt many developers would want to add programs to a new version of the desktop OS rather than another version of Windows Phone. I was concerned as I would no doubt be paying for apps and games twice, once for Windows Phone and once for Windows RT.

Windows RT works like a dream, once I had set up a variety of accounts and flicked my way through the App Store and the available games I was pleased. Lots of games and apps that I had seen before existed for Windows RT already. Things like Rowi or MetroTwit were welcome additions. Games seemed a little lacking and searching for apps seemed a little clunky.

Talking of clunky, my first few hours with Windows RT have definitely felt that way. Things like “Where is my apps list?” “How do I close apps?” “How do uninstall apps?” “How do I do anything apart from aimlessly swiping from side to side through my tiles?” are all questions racing through my head. After a while I realised if I swiped in from the right I got the charms bar which holds various settings and within apps those settings are contextual. I discovered that a swipe from the left brought up previous apps. A swipe from the bottom within an app quite often replicated a right click. A swipe from the top grabbed an app to move it about. Then there was the keyboard shortcuts, the are dozens of keyboard shortcuts to bypass menus and the like. I haven’t even started to get to grips with those.

Initial Conclusion

My initial conclusion is that the Surface RT tablet is like nothing I have ever used before. It isn’t really like using a tablet, it’s sort of like using a trimmed down laptop that the manufacturer has optimised a skin for Windows 8. That skin allows you to do a huge range of stuff with, check the weather or emails etc. I like it a lot, but I am a little concerned about the apps, already I have noticed apps on my Windows 8 netbook that don’t appear for the Surface. Whether this is because the developers didn’t understand about coding for the ARM variant processors or the just didn’t want Windows RT compatibility for their app I don’t know.

Hopefully after the initial buzz has settled down and more manufacturers release Windows RT devices things will improve. At the moment the Windows RT apps are a little odd. Certain things are conspicuous by their absence. Take Facebook and Twitter, there aren’t any apps for either. Yes you can just use the website, but it is never going to be as useful as an app with a live tile.

As this is my initial impressions if you want anything testing or trying out leave a comment below and I will answer your question or test it out in the final review. Just give me a few weeks to properly use it first.

I spend most of the day telling people to turn stuff off and back on again. Inbetween doing that I post news and reviews over here.

I am currently using a Windows Phone, an iPhone and two Android phones. My next phone is going to be either Nokia Lumia 920 or a HTC 8X.

EE demos Nokia Lumia 920 4G on Oxford St

Rating: Sorry, sir, we’ll have to take those tariffs away

GoMobile News took advantage of a brilliant invitation from EE (formerly Everything Everywhere) to try out its 4G LTE network in person on London’s Oxford Street. We were able to play with any of the 4G LTE devices which EE will offer. Including the Nokia Lumia 920, of course. Only problem? The smartphone hasn’t yet gone commercial so a rather worried EE official had to swiftly remove the tariff information in case we published it. We have to admit that the demonstrations of 4G in action were impressive and we now ‘get’ why people would want to make the switch to 4G. It’s for the rich, busy execs and uber-geeks who are ‘time poor’.The EE store invites customers to take the ’4G Challenge’ by placing their existing handset next to a 4G enabled one.

In our case, the RAZR i was on the EE network anyway so it was a good comparison.

What we picked to do was browse the BBC web site. Not for further Jimmy Saville revelations but for general news.

The difference was amasing. While our 3G handset was still struggling to load the BBC home page, on the 4G handset we’d already picked a story and started to view a video.

If you’ve only got 20 minutes free, this kind of impressive speed is a Godsend.

However, it did reveal an unfortunate aspect to the Lumia 920. It can’t run the BBC iPlayer.

Which is a major failing in the eyes of a typical Brit who has to pay £140 per annum for the BBC’s content but can’t view it.

As a Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) handset, the Nokia couldn’t run Adobe Flash either.

The EE’s network – 4GEE – goes live commercially tomorrow [October 30th 2012] and tonight some 70 UK stores will be rebranded to EE.

Around 30 stores were already Everything Everywhere so they’ve changed already.

Incidentally, if you are on either Orange or T-Mobile already, you’ll be able to switch immediately in-store to 4GEE – unless the store has run out of nano SIM cards, of course.

Our illustration shows that using Speedtest.net, the handset saw a maximum download speed of 54.8 Mbit/s and a maximum upload speed of 17.8 Mbit/s. Not on the same connexion, though.

The P1 runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich, has a 4.3? qHD display, 8 megapixel rear shooter, 1.3 megapixel front shooter and a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU. It also packs DLNA, Bluetooth and is just 7.69mm thick.

Huawei’s Ascend P1 smartphone now available
in white exclusively from Phones 4u

Exclusive white version of the super-slim Huawei Ascend P1 smartphone available from Phones 4u on pay-monthly plans from O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone

London, October 29 2012: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announces availability of its powerful and elegant Ascend P1 smartphone in white exclusively from retailer Phones 4u. The white Ascend P1 is available from tomorrow from Phones 4u in store and online free from £20.50 a month on pay-monthly deals from O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone. It is also available on pay-as-you-go for £299.95.

The Ascend P1, running Google’s Android ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ operating system, combines beauty and brains. At just 7.69mm thick, it is among the slimmest smartphones on the market. Into this elegant frame, it packs a bright 4.3-inch screen, a powerful 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and a great 8 megapixel rear facing camera.

Iconic design refresh

Availability of the white version of the Ascend P1 through Phones 4u steps up Huawei’s strategic partnership with the retailer in the UK.

Huawei Device UK and Ireland Executive Vice President Mark Mitchinson said: “Phones 4u has proven to be a leading retailer in the critically important youth and female market segments. The Ascend P1 has been recognised in the UK for its technology and its iconic good looks. The white variant brings a new dimension to its already-outstanding design, and will appeal to an audience which Phones 4u serves particularly well. We anticipate it will be a great hit with individualists looking to stand out from the crowd during this busy Christmas quarter.”

Phones 4u Chief Commercial Officer Scott Hooton said: “Our partnership with Huawei has gone from strength to strength. Huawei continues to deliver premium, great-value smartphones to the market that have been extremely well received by customers looking for design and featured-led devices. The Ascend P1 further establishes Huawei as one of the leading smartphone brands in the UK, and one that continues to feature prominently in our extensive smartphone range. Our exclusivity on the Ascend P1 in white will offer Phones 4u customers great style as well as technological substance as we approach Christmas.”

Looks, ease-of-use and power

The super-slim Ascend P1 looks good, fitting easily into a handbag or back pocket. Its stunning 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen, protected by tough Gorilla Glass, brings imaging and video to life. Its 8 megapixel camera comes with autofocus, LED flash and HD video record, and makes for a fantastic sharp- shooter on the go. The latest BSI module means great photos even in low light, plus face recognition and panorama function. It also boasts a 1.3 megapixel camera which is great for video calls and Face Unlock.

The Ascend P1 is easy to use; the Android ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ operating system delivers a seamless and intuitive smartphone experience, and Huawei’s own HAP 5.1 interface allows one-step access to dedicated applications from the unlock screen, including calls, messaging and camera.

Most of all, the Ascend P1 is built for entertainment. Its powerful 1.5GHz dual-core processor, Dolby mobile sound and knock-out graphics chip make it ideal for mobile gaming, downloading movies from Google Play and catch-up TV. It is supported by a durable 1800mAh battery, optimised with Huawei’s own signal detection technology to make the entertainment experience last longer, and fast HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, to make tethering, downloading and sharing rich multimedia content a breeze.

Boxee TV hits Walmart aisles today, flashes more apps, guide webapp and 3 months free DVR service

Launch day has finally arrived for Boxee's second hardware effort and now we're finding out even more about it. As we heard yesterday, the $99 Boxee TV will be a Walmart exclusive at retail (also available via Boxee's website), however early adopters in the holiday season can also expect a three month period to try out the "No Limits DVR" for free, plus a discounted service rate of $9.99 (normally $15) for life, three months of free Netflix access and a $5.99 Vudu credit. After the holidays, buyers can still expect free DVR trials, but there's no details on exactly what is in store. The list of supported apps has also grown, with Spotify, MLB, TED, Wall Street Journal, Accuweather and Boxee's own Cloudee joining the previously announced Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, Pandora and Vimeo on day one. Finally, we've got our first look at the HTML5 webapp that serves as a guide and second screen remote control.

For owners of the original Boxee Box, the company posted in a blog entry (the link appears to be down at the moment) that all back end support will remain running "for the foreseeable future" and an updated Flash Player is on the way. The bad news is that due to a lack of updates from Intel, it will not be able to upgrade the Netflix app for access outside the US and Canada, and agreements with premium content providers prevent opening it up for root access. The project has evolved a long way, from XBMC spinoff with a focus on support for locally stored and streaming video, then moving to a set-top box, offering OTA live TV viewing, and now its latest incarnation as a more conventionally shaped box built for OTA and ClearQAM channel viewing with the possibility of easier cable access in the future. We'll be reviewing the new hardware soon, potential buyers (especially in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Washington DC where they can access the Cloud DVR) can check out the galleries for one last look or hit the link below to try out Boxee's take on the future of TV viewing.

[APK Teardown] Google Maps Is Getting Real-Time Traffic Rerouting, And Google Now Learns How To Hold A Conversation

After having successfully survived a thunder-snowicane and completed a black-ops mission into a post-apocalyptic New York City to pick up a Nexus 4,  APK Teardown HQ is back up and running. We've accumulated a bit of a backlog, so today's entry is a 2 for 1 deal: Google Maps 6.14 and Google Now 2.1.

Maps is getting real-time traffic rerouting!

Now, you might be saying "But Maps already takes traffic into account, look at this blog post!" but let's take a look at what that blog post really says:

You don’t have to do anything to be routed around traffic; just start Navigation like you normally would, either from the Navigation app or from within Google Maps. Before today, Navigation would choose whichever route was fastest, without taking current traffic conditions into account. It would also generate additional alternate directions, such as the shortest route or one that uses highways instead of side roads. Starting today, our routing algorithms will also apply our knowledge of current and historical traffic to select the fastest route from those alternates. That means that Navigation will automatically guide you along the best route given the current traffic conditions.

Traffic is currently calculated when you hit the 'navigate' button, and then traffic calculation is over. Say you're taking a two hour road trip, and, 5 minutes into your trip, an accident happens in the tunnel you were supposed to take. Today, Maps will still tell you to take the tunnel, because it only takes traffic into consideration during the initial route calculation.

It sounds like this is going to change. There are now several references in Maps to a "route_around_traffic" message, which sounds like it will popup while you are navigating, and say "Hey this route isn't good anymore, do you want to change?" Here's the text for it:

Reroute
Reroute to avoid traffic?
Save %s via %s
Traffic ahead. Reroute to save %s via %s

The "save %s via %s" stuff will probably be in the form of "Save 20 minutes via Route 66."

In order for this message to be necessary, Maps would have to be periodically checking traffic conditions and recalculating new routes while you drive. When it finds a better route, it will prompt you with these messages. This would be really helpful for a long trip, and it's something that shouldn't be too hard to implement.

I can't show you the actual UI, but I can show you the components of the UI:

So, just picture a popup box that says "Reroute to avoid traffic?" with the time you'll save placed somewhere, and "Confirm" and "Cancel" buttons. Actually, a popup box might be too intrusive while you're navigating - it will probably be a notification.

Google Now will be learning a few new tricks as well, the most exciting of which is probably the last thing that gives me Siri/S-Voice envy: how to hold a conversation. If tell S-Voice to "Send text to Bob," it will say "Ok, sending text to Bob, what would you like it to say?" and then you can verbally dictate a message. These 2 or sometimes 3 step voice interactions are much more natural and easier than the perfectly-executed "verbal command line" that Google Now requires.

Check this out:

Calling %1$s.
Do you want to call %1$s at %2$s? Say okay, cancel, or try speaking again.
Do you want to call %s? Say okay, cancel, or try speaking again.

It a baby step, but an important baby step. Google Now will soon ask you for confirmation for "call [contact]" commands. I'm honestly not sure if this works right now or not. I've done a million "call [contact]" tests, and I've never seen it pop up, but maybe I'm not confusing Now in just the right way to trigger this. Has anyone seen this?

The other new Now tidbit is NFC support, which many people spotted in the permissions while updating. A teardown reveals absolutely nothing, which means it's probably not being used for anything right now. The thing is, I can't even imagine a hypothetical use for it. Please speculate in the comments.

LG Nexus 4 system dump available for download

We all knew it wouldn’t take long, so here it is a full system dump of the Nexus 4.

It’s only a matter of time now before we start to see modded versions of the software working on non Nexus devices, we already have a working keyboard and almost fully working camera and gallery app.

Android Task Force have been kind enough to break the dump up for us too “The system dump is available in one large file (291MB) or broken up with the apps (144MB), sounds (3.2MB) and wallpapers (4.5MB) available by themselves.”

Research In Motion starts carrier testing BlackBerry 10 for Q1 2013 launch

BlackBerry 10 is set to launch in the first quarter of 2013 and it is believed to be the company’s last chance to gain momentum in the market where it has once dominated. Recent reports suggest Canadian smartphone maker, Research In Motion (RIM), is now in the process of testing the operating system for carrier compatibility following a year-long development, a pushed back release due to unfortunate sales earnings, executive exits and loss of business clients.

An official statement from RIM chief executive, Thorsten Heins, suggests that BB10 is now being tested by, at least, 50 carriers all over the world. This process may take months to complete simply because there could be many modifications needed in the core of the system to match with the infrastructure of the carriers hoping to add BlackBerry 10-powered devices to their line-ups. To give you an overview what carrier testing means, here are two of the things any carrier may do to BlackBerry 10:

Check for network compatibility – Each carrier will have to make sure there are no significant bugs that would affect the connectivity of any device running BB10 with their network. This is, by far, the most important aspect each carrier has too check with RIM’s new operating system because if this fails, there is no way they could keep the meter running. This process would also give carriers an idea whether to provide updates to some BB devices running a lower OS version.

Add/Update custom functionality – Depending on the carrier, there could be custom functions and features that have to be added to make the offering even more attractive to new and current customers. While RIM revealed the new OS would be targeting a more general pool of users, BlackBerry has always been known to be enterprise-oriented. So, carriers that might have offered specialized plans for corporations with added functionalities also need to update their apps to make them compatible with BB10.

BlackBerry has lost its appeal in the United States and the United Kingdom but it still remains one of the most popular communication media in Asia. Analysts believe RIM has been so complacent it neglected the power of innovation after several years of prosperous business. The lack of innovation has put the company to a much troubled situation and paved a way for iOS and Android to take away its place in the world of mobile devices. But one thing remains, though; BlackBerry still offers the security no other OS has offered before.

Handtec shed some light on the confusing SIM free situation with the Nokia Lumia 920

image
Online retailer Handtec have posted some info on their blog here. Detailing as and when we can expect to see the SIM free version of the Nokia Lumia 920 and it some what makes you question the earlier post about Mobicity having stock.

Handtec posted the following short bit of info:

Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 UK Release Update
Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 UK Release Update:

Nokia UK SIM Free stock will not be available for now.

Nokia have decided to give the Nokia Lumia  920 exclusivity  to a network.

The the Nokia Lumia 820 will be available on a network and available to certain B2B channels only.

However these decisions can change and we will be looking at other channels will update as soon as we get further info.

Which makes me wonder if Mobicity have actually got stock or where it’s from. Either way things aren’t looking good if you want one soon.

Personally I would have thought Nokia would have been better off selling via as many outlets as possible.

I spend most of the day telling people to turn stuff off and back on again. Inbetween doing that I post news and reviews over here.

I am currently using a Windows Phone, an iPhone and two Android phones. My next phone is going to be either Nokia Lumia 920 or a HTC 8X.

Time-lapse map shows internet outages as Hurricane Sandy makes landfall (video)

Time-lapse map shows internet outages as Hurricane Sandy makes landfall (video)

It's no secret that Hurricane Sandy has worked a number on communications infrastructure, but now a time-lapse video created by Renesys gives us a clearer picture of when and where internet outages occurred as the storm made landfall. Green squares on the map above indicate that 99.95 percent of networks in the area are reachable, while red squares denote that more than five percent of networks are down. In Manhattan's case, Renesys estimates that there was only a ten percent failure, which it considers impressive since power was cut to much of the island. Ten percent may not sound like a huge outage, but the firm points out that population density makes it equivalent to taking a country the size of Austria off the grid. As for the 90 percent of networks in the borough that stayed online, they survived thanks to generator power. If you'd like to witness the playback of outages between October 29th and 30th, head past the jump for the video.

MACH Offers Real-Time revenue leakage detection for network operators

Unique in-memory computing technology enables real-time revenue checks

CashBack Revenue Assurance solution reduces exposure for operators, dramatically enhances customer experience

Press release

October 31st 2012. MACH, the leading provider of cloud-based managed communication services, today revealed that telecom operators worldwide are increasingly looking for revenue assurance solutions that offer real-time leakage detection to correct errors and reduce losses. The move to all-IP networks has led to real-time billing and rating driving a need for online revenue assurance solutions that also offer real-time protection, reduce exposure for operators and enhance customer experience.Revenue leakage from billing inaccuracies continues to cause problems for telecom operators worldwide.

Analysis Mason estimates typical total operator revenue leakage of between 5 per cent to 15 per cent of total network operator revenue.

While according to KPMG, 94 per cent of global telecoms operators believe that leakage will increase in the coming years, with 49 per cent describing that increase as ‘significant’.

Meanwhile, the volume and complexity of new services and network technologies creates the need for an immediate, accurate and efficient revenue assurance system.

Rasmus Holst, Senior Vice President, Market Offerings, MACH, commented, “Telecoms operators universally acknowledge that revenue assurance is a time game.”

“The more potential leaks can be detected in real-time, the more money that can be saved. In-memory computing and analytics provide a massive advantage in terms of speed.”

These techniques also allow quick response to ‘what if?’ queries, meaning analysts can predict potential revenue leakage situations and receive not just the possible loss outcome, but also information about how to respond to a particular case.”

“With immediate results to queries and pro-active pattern matching, this approach contrasts very favourably with conventional reporting tools, which might require recalculations or even database updates.”

“If Big Data queries can only be performed on static data, then this misses much of the potential associated with Big Data analysis,” Holst added.

“Increasingly operators need to be able to combine data with real-time analytics, requiring formidable data analysis techniques and the tools to consolidate and manage their data more effectively.”

“Detecting revenue leakage becomes a challenge for traditional revenue assurance models, as the solution needs to be able to detect and react at the same time.”

“Not only are operators now turning to revenue assurance solutions with a large data-handling capability, they also require the architecture to be able to analyse it straight away.”

MACH’s CashBack Revenue Assurance solution uses unique in-memory computing technology for ‘Big Data’ analysis, providing fast insights and rapid predictive analysis.

By accessing data in Random Access Memory (RAM) rather than on traditional disk, user requests are able to interact with data which is already loaded into system memory, streamlining the process and providing a quicker, more efficient experience.

Part of its M Protect portfolio, MACH’s CashBack solution manages data input through normalization, validation, reconciliation and reporting for end-to-end revenue assurance.

Using in-memory analysis techniques it provides a powerful information management capability, that helps define and compare previous data patterns and reinforces the validity of other information management techniques to pro-actively identify potential revenue leakage and sub-optimal revenue chain processes.

The cloud-based managed service ensures rapid implementation, providing enhanced performance capabilities and decreasing time to market.

Google Maps coming to iOS – now in alpha build?

There has been much chagrin and consternation around the removal of Google maps from iOS.

Reports of Apple’s new mapping app vary from excellent to useless and the outcry was enough to provoke a public apology from Apple and also contributed to the removal of Scott Forstall after he allegedly refused to sign the apology letter.

Well, there is good news on the horizon for those unhappy with Apple’s current maps offering after San Francisco developer Ben Guild posted some blurry screenshots on his website of what appears to be a Google Maps app on iOS.

According to Mr Guild the app, still in alpha version, will be vector-based, have two-finger rotation to any angle, will be “super fast” and the 4-inch height of the iPhone 5 is supported.

We have included the screenshots below for your delectation, so now its a waiting game until release!!

Unique iPhone and iPad Mini Camera Gadget

Auckland, New Zealand – Neccessory Ltd. is pleased to announce its new HiLO Lens is the first right angle lens and has just launched on Kickstarter. The HiLO Lens accessory brings the advantages of swivel/rotating digital camera screens to the iPhone and iPad.

Early digital cameras came with fixed screens but in later models swivel/flip/vari-angle screens became popular. This new freedom meant the screen no longer needed to be aligned with the scene, so awesome photos from unique angles became possible. Many photographers insist on having this camera feature.

Like early digital cameras, today’s smartphones such as the iPhone and tablets like the iPad and iPad Mini have the screen and camera in a fixed position. This makes it difficult to capture low angle shots, or take photos over a crowd. The revolutionary HiLO Lens redirects the camera 90 degrees so it becomes easy to get more creative angles in your photos.

For the iPad and iPad Mini the HiLO Lens makes photography much more practical. Tablets are uncomfortable to hold at arms length when framing photos, they also look out of place. With the HiLO Lens the tablet can be held at waist level and the photo of the horizon framed while looking down at the iPad screen.

“HiLO Lens offers possibilities for the iPhone and iPad that never existed before. The HiLO Lens is fantastic for getting low level photographs of young children and pets – just like the pros do” said Mark Hampton the creator of HiLO Lens.

The Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign has been launched to bring HiLO Lens into production. Anyone can back the HiLO Lens project on Kickstarter now and receive one of the first HiLO Lens to be produced.

To fund the initial production of HiLO Lens the team turned to Kickstarter, a crowdfunding website. Backers on Kickstarter can pre-purchase HiLO Lens now. Only after backers pledge a total of $27,500 (USD) on Kickstarter will the pledges be collected, then the initial production run will be made. If the funding goal is not reached then backer’s pledges are not collected. HiLO Lens has already raised over 60% of the goal! Backers can pre-order the HiLO Lens now for only $60 on Kickstarter. If the Kickstarter campaign is successful then In 2013 the HiLO Lens will retail for $79.95

HiLO Lens makes it easier than ever to take memorable photos with an iPhone. With HiLO Lens discover a new angle. Visit the HiLO Lens project on Kickstarter.

iOS 6.0.1 released; iOS 6.1 now available for developers

image

Apple has today pushed out the first minor bugfix to their recently released iOS 6 mobile operating system. The bugfix resolves several issues with the OS including, the camera flash not going off in some cases, a bug where the iPhone may not use the mobile network and improved the reliability of the iPhone 5 and iPod touch (5th gen) WPA2-encrypted Wi-Fi networks. For the full list, see below. It is interesting to note that iPhone 5 users must download an “updater” package via Software Update in order to download iOS 6.0.1 as updating the firmware over the air on the iPhone 5 does not work prior to this update.

iOS 6.0.1 Changelog

Fixes a bug that prevents iPhone 5 from installing software updates wirelessly over the airFixes a bug where horizontal lines may be displayed across the keyboardFixes an issue that could cause camera flash to not go offImproves reliability of iPhone 5 and iPod touch (5th generation) when connected to encrypted WPA2 Wi-Fi networksResolves an issue that prevents iPhone from using the mobile network in some instancesConsolidated the Use Mobile Data switch for iTunes MatchFixes a Passcode Lock bug that sometimes allowed access to Passbook pass deetails from lock screenFixes a bug affecting Exchange meetings.

For the security conscious among you, iOS 6.0.1 also fixes a few security issues. The security documentation, outlined here, stops iOS applications from ‘seeing’ kernel addresses accidentally included in headers from API requests and fixes an issue with WebKit whereby JavaScript arrays were handled in such a way that could cause the browser to crash and/or malicious code executed.

In addition to this, iOS 6.1 has also been released to developers today. I haven’t got access to a changelog yet as I am not enrolled in the iOS Developer Program, but as soon as I have I will update this story. Stay tuned!

Top 5 Tips for building an effective mobile strategy

by David Akka, UK md with Magic Software

Embarking on the road to building an effective enterprise mobility strategy can seem a daunting prospect. Although there are significant benefits to be derived – such as improved productivity and efficiency, many organisations have concerns about how best to overcome the challenges of security, management and mobile device proliferation. Below are five Top Tips to help build a strong framework for mobility and ensure that it has a positive impact within your organisation.

Mobile platform choice –it’s not ‘either/ or’

The first and most important thing to consider when it comes to developing a mobile enterprise strategy is platform choice.

At first glance, it may seem that you have to choose one mobile platform (Apple, Android, or BlackBerry) to work with; one device type; and one type of application.

But this simply is not true. With the right technology to back you up you can easily use any device or any platform with any application.

So, in effect, you build lots of small applications for each business process that will be mobilised.

For example, your sales person can use an iPad, whilst your technician can use BlackBerry Playbook and your internal employees can use Android. You can choose the right device for the right job.

Don’t ignore the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend

BYOD is a trend that cannot be ignored. just because it isn’t affecting your organisation right now. That doesn’t mean that it won’t in the future.

It is a trend that can have a positive impact and help to deliver cost savings for the organisation if managed effectively.

Recent research carried out by Amdoc (here) suggests that BYOD could decrease costs and increase productivity by 10-25 per cent.

Any mobile strategy must include an option to embrace BYOD, and must also incorporate a truly ‘multi-channel’ approach which accommodates different device types.

Differentiate between mobile phones and tablets

There is no need to be forced into a decision between tablets and mobiles. Companies should choose a device which is right for the job at hand.

However, it is also imperative that when the right device type is chosen, the applications that are created are built with the context of how they will be used.

This in turn affects the way any application must be designed. Developers need to design the functionality of the application around its use.

For example, with a tablet the user is two handed whereas with the phone everything needs to be done with one hand and even one finger.

Applications – don’t think monolithic

When developing applications for desktops, developers have typically tried to get as many features as possible into an application.

However, developing for mobile devices can be different. The most effective approach is to develop very small applications built with a specific process in mind.

So, in effect, you build lots of small applications for each business process that will be mobilised.

Each application should contain no more than two to five screens. This is the point at which we have found users’ acceptance of new applications remain high and there is no possibility of confusion.

Don’t forget mobile device management (MDM)

Any successful mobile strategy must also take into account the management layer of the physical devices.

What will happen if a device gets lost or is stolen? There must be a way to manage the data and the access to each device.

There are innumerable services out there that help with this from full blown mobile device management (MDM) solutions such as RIM/BlackVerry’s Fusion to services like Find my iPhone.

It is always recommended that an organisation chooses the service which suits them and that the strategy is built with this in mind.

Mobile devices are having a fundamental impact on the way that we access information and we ignore these changes at our peril.

Incorporating these steps can help to build a mobile strategy which ensures you select the right tool for the right job and that the ‘move-to-mobile’ delivers real business benefits.

A smartphone app may help to save Britain’s Ash trees

Rating: GoMobile speculates on what features it should have

Currently, the UK’s population of Ash trees is under attack from a deadly fungus called Chalara fraxinea also known as Ash dieback. Concerned organisations are launching a new web site today [Monday 29th October 2012] to provide information to concerned citizens. However, GoMobile News suggests that the proposed ashtag smartphone app might prove a highly efficient tool to combat the spread of the disease. Especially if it works anything like the way a popular Apple iOS app – leafsnap, does. The situation is, of course, serious. The UK has a population of some 80 million Ash trees which more importantly represent some 30 per cent of the UK’s entire tree coverage.

It seems that Ash dieback spores are blowing across the North Sea to the UK Norfolk and Suffolk regions where the first infected sites have been found.

With UK government cutbacks to the Forestry Commission, the authorities need all the help they can get from the public. Which is where a smartphone app would come in.

In its most basic format (and we say this because no details of the smartphone app are presently available on the Ashtag web site here), the app could be utilised to forward photos of suspected infections.

Far more useful is the fact that virtually every smartphone these days has a GPS capability so a highly accurate – if not precise, indication of the infected tree’s location could be forwarded.

Better still, the smartphone’s camera could be used to positively identify an infection or at least confirm that the tree in question really is an Ash tree by taking a picture of its leaf.

Developed by Columbia University, University of Maryland, and Smithsonian Institution, Leafsnap for iOS is intended to help its user identify trees and plants from leaves, flowers, fruit, petiole, seeds, and bark.

It was originally developed for North America but according to our sources, data which will enable British trees and plants to be identified is being added.

You can download Leafsnap for free from here.

Leafsnap is currently only available for the iPhone and other iOS devices. We hope that ashtag hasn’t made the same mistake and provides both iOS and Android versions.

Britain’s Volex feels the cost of Apple rejection

Pre-tax profits down nearly four fifths

UK electrical component firm Volex is embarking on a “comprehensive” round of cost cutting following Apple’s decision to snub it from making the iPhone 5 connector. Apple changed the cable used on its devices when it unveiled the latest iPhone last month, choosing a different design after nine years of using Volex. The news sent Volex’s shares crashing with further bad news yesterday [31st October 2012] when the manufacturer revealed turnover to September was $249.3 million (£154.6 million), down on last year, while pre-tax profit was down 78 per cent to $2.2 million.Volex’s shares fell a further four per cent on the London Stock Exchange, closing last night at 162p compared to a year high of 290p.
“The first half has been tough and lower than anticipated growth with the largest customer in the consumer sector and a challenging economic environment have combined to produce a disappointing set of results,” the company said in a statement.
Apple’s latest smartphone comes with a ‘Lightning’ plug connector, replacing the 30-pin adapters that date back to early iPods – a type that Manchester-based Volex, which until now derived an estimated 30 per cent of its revenues from the iPhone giant, would have previously supplied.
Apple’s new Lightning cables also contain new authentication chips inside their ultra tiny housing, ironically made by felllow UK manufacturer Wolfson Microelectronics, making unauthorised third-party cables unworkable.
Wolfson’s shares, by comparison, are riding high at 208p compared to 96p last December.
