Western Digital brings wafer thin 5mm hard drives to IDF, we go hands-on (video)

By Myriam Joire posted Sep 12th 2012 8:18PM Western Digital brings wafer thin 5mm hard drives to IDF, we go hands-on video

We're a jaded bunch here at Engadget sometimes, and with most of us using SSD-based systems these days it's hard to get too excited about good old spinny disks. Still we're also suckers for impressive technology, so our interest was piqued when Western Digital announced its 5mm thin 2.5-inch hard drives the other day. Luckily, the company saw fit to bring samples of its skinny new WD Black hybrid drive and WD Blue HDD to IDF 2012 and let us handle both briefly. The verdict? These are impossibly thin -- perfect for all those nice Ultrabooks we're expecting to see hit the market in the next few months. Details on performance, availability and pricing are scarce since these drives are intended for OEMs. Take a look at our gallery below, which includes thickness comparisons with WD's upcoming 1TB 7mm thin HDD and a standard-sized loyalty card -- then peek past the break for our hands-on video.

Update: yes, the loyalty card was demagnetized in the making of this video, and you now owe us all coffee.

World's oldest color film footage discovered in museum archive (video)

DNP oldest color film footage

Cached away for over a century, the world's first color moving pictures have been shown for the first time yesterday, according to the National Media Museum in the UK. The celluloid, shot by inventor Edward Raymond Turner in 1899, was actually in black and white and it was only through a curator's research that its colorful significance was also unearthed.

When the footage was first shot, each frame was run consecutively through red, green or blue gels, and the process needed to be reversed during projection to reveal the color. Fortunately, a blueprint by the inventor of how to do just that was also found, allowing the institution's team to replicate the process digitally to produce the final footage.

This type of color gel processing didn't take off in the early 20th century due to the mechanical complexity, and it would have been inferior to a chemical process since each frame carried only one-third of the full color information. Still, it required a clever mind to dream it up, with an equally big brain to uncover it and finally give Turner his due. See the video below the break for the stunning un-retouched, non-hand-colored results.

Tesla CEO teases crossover and sports car EVs for 2016

By Jon Fingas posted Sep 12th 2012 4:11PM Tesla Model X introduction with CEO Elon Musk

Tesla founder Elon Musk would like to remind you that the Model X isn't the terminus of his company's electric car ambitions. Far from it: Musk tells Wired that Tesla's 2016 plans include both a crossover SUV akin to the BMW X3 as well as a pure sports car that goes beyond just a Roadster redux. The racier vehicle will have speed, but "not supercar pricing," the CEO says. He also elaborated on already-known plans for an 'entry' sedan in 2015, which should resemble a 20 to 25 percent smaller Model S and cost about $30,000 if all goes well. There's a wide gap between promises and reality in all those statements, but Musk has a reputation for largely delivering on target -- which gives us hope that there will finally be Tesla EVs within range of everyday budgets.

BitGym Motion SDK brings Kinect-style games to Android and iOS, no huge living room required (video)

BitGym Motion SDK brings Kinectstyle gaming to Android and iOS, no massive living room required video

If there's a common barrier to playing with a Kinect controller, it's free space. The sheer amount of necessary distance between sensor and player is fine for suburbanites with expansive living rooms, but not so hot for apartment dwellers. Thankfully, BitGym is doing its best to bring hands-free gaming to small spaces with a new Motion SDK for Android and iOS developers. The kit takes advantage of the front cameras on phones and tablets to track three-axis movement, leans and multiple players without any special hardware -- and without necessarily rearranging the furniture. It's built to work with Unity 3D and most common app code on both platforms, all with a reportedly low overhead for mobile processors. Just don't anticipate any leaps and sidesteps in your loft for the next little while. Although the SDK is ready today, we won't see shipping games built on the motion-friendly framework until early 2013.

New 'nano-code' could help fight banknote forgery by embedding invisible QR-style ciphers

New nano-code ups the fight against counterfeiters

PARIS - Scientists on Wednesday reported they had invented an invisible tag using the widely-used "quick response" code to help thwart banknote forgers and criminals who sell bogus drugs or fake vintage wine.

The QR code is a square of black and white pixels that can be scanned by a smartphone, which then links to an Internet address.

It is being used more and more by museums and companies who want to provide additional information about an exhibition, product or service, but the idea here is to use it as a form of authentication.

Writing in the British journal Nanotechnology, materials engineers led by Jon Kellar at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology says their invention comprises a QR code made of nanoparticles that have been combined with blue and green fluorescent ink.

The code, generated with standard computer-aided design (CAD) equipment, is sprayed onto a surface -- paper, plastic film, office tape, glass -- using an aerosol jet printer.

It remains invisible until the object is illuminated by a near-infrared laser.

The nanoparticles absorb photons at a non-visible wavelength but emit them in a visible wavelength, a trick called upconversion that causes the QR code to pop up almost like magic and allow itself to be scanned.

To see whether the code would stand some of the stresses of banknotes, the researchers printed it onto a piece of paper and then randomly folded it 50 times, without affecting its readability.

"We have done significant wear tests, and all indications are that the ink is very durable," Kellar told AFP in an email exchange.

He admitted though that it was not the final answer to forgers.

"We believe it raises a bar that needs to be continually raised. Counterfeiters are very clever and have access to technology, so we will continue to improve our technology."

The study's lead author, Jeevan Meruga, said the innovation offers many options for an upgrade.

"We can take the level of security from covert to forensic by simply adding a microscopic message in the QR code, in a different coloured upconverting ink, which then requires a microscope to read the upconverted QR code," he said.

The technique is simple and not time-consuming, according to the scientists.

Printing en masse for commercial use would only take about 10-15 minutes.

"We have not as of yet done a critical review of costs, so we cannot say anything (about prices) at this point," said Kellar in response to a question.

Near-infrared lasers are quite cheap and easy to operate, and could be used for authentication "outside of the lab" provided the eyes are protected, he said.

Nikon unveils lightweight, full-frame D600 DSLR -- hands-on and low-light samples (video)

PERFORMANCE THAT FUELS THE PASSION: THE NEW NIKON D600 PUTS FX-FORMAT IN FOCUS FOR PHOTO ENTHUSIASTS

As Nikon's Smallest, Lightest and Most Affordable Full-Frame HD-SLR, the D600 Packs in Powerful, Pro-Grade Photo and Video Features with Wireless Sharing and Capture Capabilities

MELVILLE, N.Y. (September 13, 2012) – Today, Nikon Inc. announced the 24.3-megapixel (MP) D600, a camera that is designed to deliver the image quality and performance benefits of a full frame FX-format sensor to the enthusiast looking to take their dedication to the next level. The Nikon D600 offers a remarkable value, merging the perfect combination of a lightweight, compact form factor and superior image quality, making the leap into FX-format photography more attractive than ever.

Whether shooting stills or Full HD video, advanced features and Nikon technologies like the newly developed high resolution CMOS sensor and EXPEED 3 image processing engine are designed to meet the needs of the most demanding creative vision. Additionally, Nikon's new optional WU-1b wireless adapter allows users to shoot high quality HD-SLR images and transfer them to their mobile device, making it easier to stay connected, without the need for wires.

"For many, image making is so much more than a hobby; it is a way of life that changes the way the world is perceived. The Nikon D600 represents a new category of camera for this user and demonstrates Nikon's devotion to the passionate photographer who is always looking for new ways to express their creativity through their photos and HD videos," said Bo Kajiwara, Vice President of Marketing, Planning and Customer Experience, Nikon Inc. "By offering users the advanced FX-format and key features inherited from our professional cameras, along with new functions like optional wireless capabilities, Nikon is inspiring photographers by providing an imaging experience that satisfies like never before."

Superior Image Quality
Nikon's FX-format offers photographers exciting image quality possibilities, from dazzling dynamic range and exacting detail to stellar low-light ability. The D600 employs Nikon's newly developed, large 24.3 MP FX-format CMOS Sensor (35.9 x 24mm) to offer photographers a versatile camera that provides amazing image quality and sharpness, with ample resolution to tackle almost any project. Because the needs of the advanced amateur varies widely, the new CMOS sensor provides a wide ISO range from 100-6400 (expandable from 50-25,600) to give photographers maximum low-light flexibility yielding clean images with minimal noise and accurate color. The full ISO range can also be used while capturing HD video in challenging light. Nikon's exclusive EXPEED 3 image processing engine interprets the massive amount of image data flowing from the sensor to quickly process images and HD video. The result is striking images and impressive HD video that exhibits faithful color reproduction and tonal range throughout the frame.

Precision Technology Engineered for the Enthusiast
Enthusiasts of all types demand the best from their gear, and the Nikon D600 is a camera engineered with intuitive features that give photographers an edge in the field. Whether shooting lush landscapes, action sports or the elusive animals of the Serengeti, Nikon's Scene Recognition System and 2,016 pixel RGB sensor excels in any situation. By recognizing the scene prior to capture, the system meticulously analyzes factors such as color and brightness with extraordinary precision and compares all the data using Nikon's exclusive 30,000 image database. The result is enhanced AF performance and flattering exposures.

For precise AF performance in a wide variety of shooting conditions, the D600 features a 39 point AF system with the new MultiCAM 4800FX AF module. This AF array is well suited to a wide variety of shooting styles and disciplines, offering AF modes to let users select a single point, continuous AF, Dynamic AF or use 3D tracking to keep pace with a moving subject throughout the frame. Additionally, the system features nine cross type sensors for maximum accuracy, while seven AF points are fully functional when using compatible NIKKOR lenses and teleconverters with an aperture value up to f/8 for extreme telephoto applications.

To keep up with action sports, active wildlife or the photo opportunity that unexpectedly arises, the D600 is ready to shoot in 0.13 seconds, with a 0.052 second shutter release. The camera emphasizes speed and performance, from overall operation and image processing, helped in part by the exceptional EXPEED 3 processing engine. The camera is also capable of bursts of images at 5.5 frames per second (fps) at full resolution with full AF, to capture decisive moments. To further enhance speed and workflow, images and video can also be rapidly transferred to dual SD card slots that are compatible with the latest SDXC and UHS-1 high speed standards.

Enthusiasts will also appreciate other thoughtful features made to appeal to more advanced photographers, such as the 100% frame coverage seen through optical viewfinder. The wide and bright view makes it easy to compose in a variety of conditions, and affords the ability to enjoy shooting for hours on end with minimal eye fatigue. Additionally, the D600 features several scene modes and features to enhance creativity, including one-touch access to Picture Control functions through a new dedicated button. Photographers can also shoot images in High Dynamic (HDR) mode for amazing highlights, and create awe-inspiring time lapses with ease.

Experience Full HD
The Nikon D600 has advanced video features that are ideal for those ready to embrace the world of HD-SLR video, as well as those already enjoying its benefits such as manual control, depth of field, low-light ability and lensing options. This camera gives users the ability to record Full HD at varying frame rates and resolutions including 1080p video at 30, 25 or 24p, and 720p video at 60, 50 and 30p. When shooting HD video at the highest quality setting, up to 20 minutes can be recorded, or up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds in normal quality for added convenience when shooting static shots such as interviews and events. The large 3.2-inch 921K dot LCD screen makes it easy to preview images or video captured, navigate the menu system or confirm critical HD focus, while automatic brightness control adapts seamlessly to changing lighting conditions.

Sophisticated video features help to increase the production value on any project, including full manual control of exposure, and the ability to switch between FX and DX-format (1.5X) at Full HD for a telephoto boost and alter depth of field. Users can opt to focus manually or can take advantage of the full-time AF while recording to help ensure faces are in focus or track a moving subject. Additionally, videographers have the ability to capture audio with the onboard microphone or record stereo audio externally using the mic input. Audio can be monitored through the headphone jack and levels can be displayed on the LCD with peaking.

In addition to the ability to play back HD video and images through the HDMI terminal, users are also able to experience pro-grade video features in the Nikon D600. For monitoring and streaming applications, the image can be displayed on the LCD screen while simultaneously shown on another monitor through the HDMI, with or without shooting data. What's more, the D600 adds the ability to transfer uncompressed video via the HDMI connection, which can then be routed to a digital recorder or similar device.

Remote Sharing and Capture
Photography is a form of expression, which can now be shared more ways than ever before through social networks and online communities. To accompany the D600, Nikon has also announced the optional WU-1b Wireless Adapter that allows users to connect wirelessly to the camera. A companion Wireless Mobile Adapter Utility application for Android™ based mobile devices is also available at no additional cost. 1 Furthermore, an application for the iPhone® and iPad® mobile digital devices will be available on September 15, 2012.2

When connected, users are able to share their images taken with the D600 through their mobile device to their social circles, as well as send and download images from their camera to a compatible device.3 The adapter also allows users to remotely fire the D600's shutter from up to 50 feet from the camera, which is ideal for capturing photos from unique vantage points.

NIKKOR, Speedlight and System Compatibility
Supporting the D600 is Nikon's heritage in optical excellence, more than 70 NIKKOR AF and AF-S compatible lenses for maximum versatility. Those with DX-format lenses will also be happy to know that these lenses can also be used on the camera as well as the ability to set DX crop for stills or video to extend the reach of telephoto or telephoto zoom lenses.

The new Nikon HD-SLR is also a gateway to Nikon's renowned Creative Lighting System (CLS) which illuminates a whole new world of creative image making using multiple Speedlights. A built-in Speedlight commander can control multiple Speedlights such as Nikon's SB-700, SB-910 or Wireless Close Up Speedlight System, and the camera can also control up to two individual speedlight groups for further creative control.

Constructed to Inspire
Built to withstand the wide variety of shooting conditions enthusiasts face, the body of the D600 is sealed and gasketed against dirt and moisture. The camera uses magnesium alloy top and rear construction to provide a lightweight camera with maximum durability. The shutter has been tested for 150,000 cycles, and sensor cleaning is also employed. The battery is rated for approximately 900 shots, affording photographers the ability to shoot all day. Additionally, the optional MB-D14 Multi Power Battery Pack extends the grip for comfort and can effectively double the battery capacity when using two batteries.

The D600 is also built with an emphasis on handling with thoughtful ergonomics and button placement, in a body that is compact enough to carry comfortably on any excursion. The hand grip has been improved for comfort, while the overall impression from using the camera is reassuringly solid. To avoid accidental engagement, the shutter button has been recessed, while the Mode Dial can be locked.

Price and Availability The Nikon D600 will be available on September 18, 2012 for the suggested retail price (SRP) of $2,099.95*, for body only, or with the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR for the SRP of $2,699.95*. Dreams, curiosity and a passion for what's next: picking the brain of Innovation Lab's Mads Thimmer

Dreams, curiosity and a passion for what's next picking the brain of Innovation Lab's Mads Thimmer

Innovation. According to one Mads Thimmer, it's a word that held a great deal of mystery some 10-plus years ago, but today, "it's thrown around as a cliché." When you really get down to it, though, the art of innovating is a hugely delicate and complex one, fraught with frustration and a curious passion for never settling on the here and now. In covering the world of consumer technology, I've come to form my own understanding of what innovation is, what it isn't and how companies are embracing (or outright shunning) the idea. After an evening with the cofounder of Innovation Lab, however, I was rightfully ready to toss my own preconceived notions aside.

Dreams, curiosity and a passion for what's next picking the brain of Innovation Lab's Mads Thimmer

According to Thimmer himself -- a man that created a "404" beer that only true internet nerds would appreciate -- the corporate world took its toll on him early on. Specifically, it was the seemingly endless bureaucracy that tends to sulk around and adhere to corporations with minimal friction. Prior to seeking sanity in his own company, he was crafting games for Games Workshop, working in press relations at Danish telecom TDC and "translating Virginia Woolf to Danish." His view of cubes and hierarchy is one shared by plenty of those who have been buried in the enterprise at one point or another -- myself included. I spent two years at DuPont pushing Excel sheets around, and another two at Nortel as its CEO drove a sinking ship directly into an iceberg. It's quite possible that I'll never get back the portions of my soul that I lost at each place, but if anything, those experiences have made me exceptionally grateful for everything that has come after.

Rather than seeking solace in a different profession as I did, Thimmer decided to devote his life to rescuing the lost. The exaggeration is my own, but Thimmer himself confesses that his work at Innovation Lab "isn't a career, but a lifestyle." Indeed, what he has built is difficult to explain if you've only time to hear an elevator pitch. It's not a consulting firm -- he's fairly turned off by the term -- and it's not just a coworking space. Innovation Lab, a non-profit entity based in Denmark but with tentacles in countless locales around the globe, was founded to do a couple of things. One: to attract corporate clientele seeking a more unchained way of thinking to solve problems. And two: to enable its own employees to curate events in order to deliver its message and have it spread in the outside world. He's certainly okay with working with startups, but perhaps surprisingly, he prefers to target corporate minds that have already been polluted by rules and stipulations.

Dreams, curiosity and a passion for what's next picking the brain of Innovation Lab's Mads Thimmer

In an effort to have Thimmer explain precisely what Innovation Lab is, I ask him how he'd describe his life's work to others. After a bit of pondering, he confesses that simply describing a portfolio of successes and failures wouldn't do much good. At the Lab, you see, past performance has little bearing on the future. After all, incredible ideas that were relevant in the world of technological innovation just five years ago probably aren't so much today. That said, he does fondly recall working with a local Danish group that eventually went on to launch PLAY -- one of the planet's first music-streaming services to mobile. In fact, that project launched in March of 2008, well before stars like Spotify and Pandora were known outside of their own closets.

I ask Thimmer what motivates his efforts, and what drives the machine at Innovation Lab. He chuckles a bit, and first confesses that even he doesn't exactly have a "role." He adds, "Rules inevitably lead to restrictions.... I don't like systems. I don't like rules." You may assume that's a rebel's voice, but it's assuredly not. It's delivered with a sense of urgency that perhaps only he can truly understand -- after all, he's spent the last 10 years trying to preach openness, respect and curiosity to companies that are being backed into a wall by shareholders who seek little more than short-term gains on playful stock maneuvers.

He fully understands the reality of the situation -- in fact, part of every conversation involves the balancing of curiosity with reality, and then relentlessly pursuing methods that would enable sheer curiosity to create a new reality. Effectively, the goal at Innovation Lab is to use its myriad coworking spaces to let new ideas flow freely, outside of the conventional rulebook. As Thimmer puts it, there's no rulebook to succeeding in today's market. Says Thimmer: "From 1998 to 2008, most of these companies could just throw anything to market, and it'd succeed. Management today is using a rulebook based on a decade of tactics that no longer work in a demand-driven market. In the years before, we were living in debt-driven times, so there's no real benchmark on how or why something was successful." In other words, it's easy to succeed when money flows freely; when consumers are forced to clamp down and get picky, the real challenges begin to surface.

Dreams, curiosity and a passion for what's next picking the brain of Innovation Lab's Mads Thimmer

I should also point out that Thimmer is relatively opposed to "goals." The point is brought up after I ask him about any overriding goals he has for Innovation Lab. To him, the mere act of setting a goal is the act of placing blinders upon one's eyes -- if you're only aiming for a specific finish, you're missing out on opportunities to see what no other is seeing. And once you cross that line, what next? Complacency? A lifetime of using the same approaches to cross different finish lines? At some point, the rinse-repeat methodology renders an idea or company behind the curve, and once that's recognized, it's likely too late to alter one's tactics. To him, the extended success of Innovation Lab will be the perpetual impact of positivity in the people and companies he comes into contact with.

To that, I inquire how he feels about frustrations. "Surely," I ask, "companies you meet with have obstacles and frustrations. You speak freely of new and open approaches to solving technological issues, but how do you handle the inevitable setbacks?" Thimmer admits that he typically refuses projects that involve things like IT security and privacy, knowing full well that the requirements there are so burdensome that it makes it nearly impossible to rethink how these issues must be approached. "But for every one of me," he adds, "there are hundreds of negative thinkers." It's a statement that resonates with me -- there are far too many instances of negativity, even in the realm of technology, and finding those devoted to instilling a new kind of culture into companies is rare.

Dreams, curiosity and a passion for what's next picking the brain of Innovation Lab's Mads Thimmer

"I can't think of a single company that has chosen to cannibalize itself and then failed specifically because of that," says Thimmer. "But look at the list of companies that have attempted to halt industry-wide innovation in an effort to prolong profits by maintaining a status quo." It's true. RIM, for years, continued to produce handsets that looked exactly like the model it announced a year before -- surely people would continue to adore its legendary keyboard, right? Wrong. Regarding an idea put forth by myself in our conversation, Thimmer concurs that RIM was a classic case of a company shying away from self-cannibalization, only to have other companies swoop in and do the deed for it. Nokia, similarly, faced "managerial issues" that kept it from spotting the writing on the wall.

As a Dane, Thimmer has enjoyed a better view than most US journalists when it comes to the deterioration of Nokia. He describes an era where Nokia's marketing efforts plastered televisions with its "Connecting People" slogan. "People were enamored," he says. "They'd see the ads, flock to stores and pay whatever they had to pay to come away with 'that new Nokia.'" According to Thimmer, it lulled Nokia into a place of comfort and complacency -- a place where it'd be a waste of time and resources to even think about the future being anything but bright. He witnessed a company rake in hundreds of millions in revenue, and rather than spend that internally in an attempt to disrupt itself, it waited until 2007 to have itself disrupted.

Dreams, curiosity and a passion for what's next picking the brain of Innovation Lab's Mads Thimmer

"Today, the iPhone possesses Olympic status," says Thimmer. "It wasn't that way in 2007 -- I recall rather lukewarm reactions to it here in Denmark. Nokia laughed it off. But as it was riding the wave of massive cellular adoption, it was ignoring an opportunity to build a mobile operating system more fluid and enjoyable than that on the iPhone. It finally chose a different path some two years too late."

Apple, on the other hand, took a very different approach. On the day the original iPhone was introduced, CEO Steve Jobs actually called out the fact that the iPhone could take the place of an iPod. That it was an iPod. Effectively, he was ensuring that you -- the consumer -- realized that this new device was a more multifaceted version of its hottest-selling product. That, by definition, is self-cannibalization. As if prophetically, Apple has been selling fewer iPods ever since -- the lone sad trombone in every quarterly earnings call is the unsurprising slide in classic iPod sales. But rather than waiting for someone else to come and destroy its iPod market with another creation entirely, it went ahead and did the honors. One could even argue that the iPad is in the earliest stages of also cannibalizing at least a portion of Apple's Mac sales.

Dreams, curiosity and a passion for what's next picking the brain of Innovation Lab's Mads Thimmer

In a slight pivot, I bring up the ill-fated Kin that Microsoft launched a number of years ago. "Is that not the atypical outside-of-the-box thinking that you'd never expect a behemoth like Microsoft to muster? Is that not exactly the kind of thing you're encouraging companies to do? How do you respond to a Microsoft executive that uses something like the Kin's failure as leverage to severely throttle the funding of wild new ideas?" Thimmer clearly understands that things like this do indeed happen, but he suggests that Microsoft likely did not do one of the fundamental things his staff implores clients to do: cultural research. "Too many companies look at product launches and expect marketing and timing to do the rest. If a product fails, it's clearly due to failed marketing. It's never due to a failed product."

Brash, but oftentimes true. Hours earlier, I spoke at a Financial Innovation Network session dreamt up and hosted by Innovation Lab. In the building were a few dozen players from all sides of the banking industry, each struggling with ways to handle the new realities facing banks in an ever-digital world. Effectively, they view brick-and-mortar banks as becoming less important, and in turn, less necessary. To combat that sort of grim reality requires a renewed sense of thinking -- a problem-solving solution that won't come from any rulebook. On the topic of mobile payments, Thimmer notes that banks cannot simply form a bond, agree on a technology and launch a product into a global market without first studying cultural norms in the regions they hope to penetrate. "In some areas, the physical exchange of cash is culturally significant," he says. "To make mobile payments work there, for example, you would need to create a process that very closely mimics the expression of the presently accepted transaction. Or, at least, educate that market on what the new offering is. Throwing a product into the wild and expecting people to simply adapt to it will not always be successful."

In other words, Microsoft's cultural research department failed to pick up red flags as the Kin was being engineered. It's as if they expected tweens in 2010 to be completely receptive to a socially minded featurephone with full-blown data rates. Somehow, inexplicably, Microsoft's research team missed the fact that tweens in 2010 were demanding iPhones.

Dreams, curiosity and a passion for what's next picking the brain of Innovation Lab's Mads Thimmer

If there are three pillars to Innovation Lab, it would be these: great people, great places and great projects. To date, the company has branded offices in Denmark's Copenhagen and Aarhus as well as Nuuk in Greenland. But it has partnered with technologically minded coworking spaces around the globe to bring those in Scandinavia and Greenland closer to those in Silicon Valley, Barcelona, New York and beyond. It's hoping to expand in San Francisco (and will soon be changing its Copenhagen address to an extraordinary new space near Tivoli Gardens), and via partnerships to any nook or cranny available. With a (roughly) 50 / 50 mix of responding to pleas for new approaches and hosting curated sessions like the I one I attended in Denmark's capital, Innovation Lab is aiming not to provide temporary solutions to long-rooted problems, but entirely new approaches to business that remove walls, remove rules and remove the notion of conventional expectations.

Thimmer (and myself, for what it's worth) concurs that failure in technology should be more celebrated than it is. For every rousing success story at Google (Gmail, Android, Maps, etc.) there are rows upon rows of brilliant ideas that didn't go anywhere for one reason or another. But that's okay, says Thimmer. He also believes that specific rules and regulations placed on employees by management eventually act to hinder the overall performance of the company, and that the art of avoiding risk by ignoring the future is in fact more risky than leaping after the unknown. Perhaps it's all a bit utopian, the idea of technology companies having their success viewed at least in part on how positively they impact their own employees and the world around them. But if it's between that or some arbitrary figure of value trading hands 700 times per second on a stock exchange, I'll take the former. No one ever said innovation and crazy couldn't coexist, right?

iPhone 5 is noticeably thinner, measuring just 7.6 millimeters thin. The total thickness of an iPhone5 plus a Zero 5 slim case is just 8.1 millimeters thin. Besides its super slim body that measures only 0.5mm in thickness, Zero 5 is lightweight and durable and offers comprehensive protection to your iPhone. Zero 5 protects the sides of the iPhone by protruding slightly above the front screen. The back of the case has a precise cutout for the iPhone’s camera and flash. To provide further protection to your iPhone 5, a front film is provided.

If you’re looking for a case that would protect your iPhone 5 and would retain its slim form and sleek appearance, Zero 5 (0.5mm) for iPhone 5 is worth to take a look. As the name implies, Zero 5 (0.5mm) is very slim with thickness of 0.5mm and weight of 6 grams. It can fully show off more of the new iPhone design with the minimal case design while protecting your iPhone 5 from shocks and impacts. A smooth finish adds a modern touch to the classic style.

iLightningCam 5.0 – Photography of Real Lightning with iPhone Made Easy

AppId is over the quota

Vienna, Austria – Even with professional equipment a lighting strike is hard to capture. As opposed to a DSLR (Digital single-lens reflex camera) this app works completely hands-free during day and night even for small strikes or flashes. Just point your iPhone towards the part of the sky/thunderstorm where you expect lightning to strike, then start ‘iLightningCam’ and wait. The app will automatically capture lightning if it happens in your view. In addition, it offers the first ever ISO control for iPhone, which is the only way to capture lightning during night without overexposure. It also offers full photo resolution without any tricks or interpolation.

The new version offers an assistant, who guides you to the perfect camera settings within 30 seconds, even if you are new to photography. In addition, the user interface was completely new designed with lots of intuitive icons and it is now possible to adapt the app to the distance of the lightning for better exposure of the images.

For people who are still hesitate to believe that this is possible with a cell phone, Florian Stiassny offers a growing gallery of original lightning images taken using ‘iLightningCam’ at his website. In addition, the app offers a detailed illustrated manual, which explains the background of lightning of photography with an iPhone (R).

A warning from the developer: Thunderstorms are obviously dangerous and life threatening for everyone and not healthy for iPhones either. Take care using this app! InstaSplash is a must have App for all Instagram Users

Bangalore, India – PixelForce today is pleased to announce InstaSplash free for iOS, their Photo & Video app that allows users to create dramatically enhanced photos by selectively removing or altering the color of people and objects in the photo and share to Instagram. InstaSplash makes it easy to turn a color photo completely black & white, and then selectively replace the original colors or paint in new ones. The app works with most photos from the camera, Facebook, or the iOS Photo Library. InstaSplash features: unlimited undos, revert to original, zoom in & out, move photo left/right & up/down, compatibility with most photo resolutions, powerful save & export & import, continuously variable color selection for 16 million possible shades, and post card delivery with built-in Sincerely Ship capability, which creates and ships a 4 x 6 personalized postcard anywhere in the world.

In the age of iOS photography, where billions of snapshots are in circulation around the globe, it is not easy to make a portrait photo stand out. A technique long used by professionals, selective desaturation, produces dramatic results by accenting a black & white photo with splashes of color. Until recently, a photographer needed a costly Photoshop-like piece of software to expertly execute this graphic sleight of hand. Now, InstaSplash produces professional results effortlessly in a free app for iOS.

To start, users can use photos from any of the following sources: Facebook Profile photo, Facebook Album photos, iOS Photo Library or Album, built-in camera, or Clipboard. Once opened in the app, the user can completely desaturate (remove the color from) the photo with one button. Next, the creative photographer uses the normal two-finger gesture to zoom in to the photo, making it easier to add color to a small area. Two-finger manipulation of the photo is easy, even on an iPhone-sized screen. User can choose from two kinds of color accents: natural or artificial. Natural accents reveal the actual, original color “beneath” the B&W photo. Artificial accents allow the user to paint a translucent color over any part of the B&W photo, turning an orange blue if desired. Because it is a semi-transparent layer of color, the details of the object, including highlights and shadow, show through, which adds realism. Photo retouchers can dial in any one of more than 16 million colors, and can paint using a fingertip or variable sized paintbrush. Another choice is to colorize the entire photo, for example, add a sepia tint uniformly to the entire picture. Finally, the user can add the Captions to the image with millions of possible customizations and share the image to Instagram with just a button click.

Feature Highlights:
* Selective desaturation – remove color from selected areas
* Colorize – pick the color you like and paint your photos
* Captions – Add the captions to your image
* Get the images from your Facebook Album, Facebook Profile Photo, Photo Album, and Camera
* Upload your work to Instagram, Facebook Albums, Facebook Wall, Phone Album, Email and Clipboard
* Supports Undo with unlimited (until memory is full in your device) number of levels
* Save as many projects as you want
* Multiple resolutions to choose while Uploading your images
* Copy the image to the clipboard and use it wherever you like
* Zoom In, Zoom Out and Pan using your two fingers
* Use the Brush size that works for you
* See the Brush tip while working on the image, so that it will be easy for you while working on the image
* And it is free

With their new photo finished, InstaSplash artists can save the photograph to the iOS Photo Library or the Clipboard. Integrated export and upload options include: Instagram, email, Facebook Albums, Twitpic, and the newly incorporated post card feature.

“It has been very gratifying to see InstaSplash become a Top 10 Photography app in more than 30 App Stores worldwide,” commented Sanjeeva Reddy Co-Founder of PixelForce. “Our plan is to continually improve it and keep it free, so that more and more people can enjoy it.”

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
* Requires iOS 3.2 or later
* 15.8 MB

SYS Activity Manager 4.0 Optimized for iPhone 5 Widescreen And iOS6

Brooklyn, New York – Appsware today is pleased to announce the upcoming release of SYS Activity Manager 4.0 for iOS, an update to their Utility app optimized for iPhone 5 widescreen that helps identify memory being used on a mobile device, allowing users to free up memory space, monitor 3G and Wi-Fi network speed, monitor and improve battery life, and speed up device performance. The update version already in App Store review process. Version 4.0 will be available for download from 21st September. The SYS Activity Manager utility was already the #1 downloaded app in all category in more than 17 countries around the world including Germany, Italy and Japan, and #1 downloaded utility app its kind worldwide including USA App Store with 4.8 user ratings.

Owing to their multitasking capabilities, there are cases where applications that appear to have been closed actually may remain running in the background, limiting the performance of an iDevice. SYS Activity Manager locates, displays, and auto-closes these applications, freeing up device memory and enabling a faster running device. SYS Activity Manager can find the memory and battery draining applications that other apps cannot. It generates a graphic and data representation of Wired, Active, Inactive, and Free memory allocation, providing users with a real-time view of the memory status of their device. In addition, the app provides Process details, information on Free and Used disc space, Battery Life status, and Network particulars. With its easy-to-use graphical user interface, the app is intuitive and completely “non-technical.”

Having applications that are not currently being used running in the background of a mobile device can drain battery and reduce the speed and performance of a mobile device. This can be a frustrating experience as users rely on optimally functioning mobile devices for their business and personal lives. Fortunately, the information and functionality that SYS Activity Manager provides allows users to easily identify and close these applications, providing optimal device function and battery life. Memory optimization apps perform two related jobs. One, they scan the device, looking for applications that are running, despite not being currently in use on the device. And two, they allow the user to close unnecessary applications identified in the scan. SYS Activity Manager performs both of these functions with a single button, making this a maintenance task that can be performed quickly and effortlessly.

SYS Activity Manager 4.0 for iOS is part of a new breed of memory management and optimization apps for three important reasons. First, SYS Activity Manager is uncomplicated and easy to use. The user is provided with real-time accurate information and can easily identify and close running applications. There are no Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced memory management methods. There is one simple default that works flawlessly. SYS Activity Manager instructs users to identify open applications by double-clicking on the Home button, highlighting the application the user wishes to close, and closing the application.

The second reason SYS Activity Manager represents a new kind of memory management app is that its scan will find memory draining applications that other apps miss. Third and last, SYS Activity Manager displays current information in real time, while the app continues to scan.

Feature Highlights:
* iPhone, iPad, iPod memory(RAM) cleaning
* User-friendly graphic interface
* Easy adjustments for optimal battery life and device performance
* Scan for memory usage, applications running, in real time
* Visualization of Wired, Active, Inactive, Free memory allocation
* List display of running background applications and other system processes
* Multiple visual displays detailing battery status and use
* Configurable full charge & battery maintenance alerts
* 100% charge notification, effective for users in a rush
* Accurate time-to-charge displays
* Visualization of disk space status and usage
* Detect cellular data network & Wi-Fi network connection status
* Internet connection speed test

SYS Activity Manager provides detailed information beyond current memory usage. The Process tab of SYS Activity Manager features a list display of running background applications and other system processes. It instructs users on how to close and manage background applications to reduce the load on the CPU, battery and memory. The Disc tab provides a visualization and data summary of disc space and usage. The Battery Tab allows users to adjust battery health and perform an accurate, 3-step charge process. It supports full cycle and trickle charging and features multiple battery detail visual displays, alarms to indicate charging status, 100% charge notification, and more. The Network tab detects cellular data network & Wi-Fi network connection statuses, displays IP & MAC addresses, and Internet connection speed test.

“SYS Activity Manager is the simple, stress-free way to improve the battery life and speed of your mobile device,” stated Appsware’s Taslim Sohel. “Unlike other data memory optimization programs that are difficult to learn and use, SYS Activity Manager works as soon as it’s launched. Never unnecessarily drain your battery again.”

Nvidia Teases The Bard's Tale, Coming Soon To Tegra Devices

The older among you may remember back in the hallowed days of the Apple II The Bard's Tale was a neat text-based RPG that gained quite a following. Well, fast-forward 20-something years and The Bard's Tale arrived on iOS as a reimagined 3D action RPG. Now that same version of the game is destined for Android, and it's going to be a Tegra exclusive.

The original Bard's Tale was heavy on pithy humor, and its modern reincarnation follows that script. In the game, you will play the Bard, a wandering ne'er-do-well that's tired of the questing thing.  All he wants is to find some "coin and cleavage." Well, wouldn't you know it... the quests just keep popping up. With a big dose of deadpan comedy and solid voice acting, The bard's Tale is getting a lot of attention on iOS.

screenshot01 screenshot02 screenshot03

The Bard's Tale is a mostly top-down RPG with lots of hack-and-slash fun, as well as plenty of cut scenes. There is a huge open world to explore with achievements, loot, and 50 different enemy types. Nvidia is claiming 20-30 hours of gameplay, and that probably means a really big download (it's 1.34GB on iOS). No word on pricing, but it's $4.99 on iOS and there will be some in-app purchases. The most specific Nvidia will get on the release date is Q3 2012, which means we should see this drop in the next month or so.

Google Introduces "Apps Focus" On The Play Store - Bringing Together Topical Collections Of Great Apps

Notice something new on the Play Store today? Google just added another featured area that should provide just a little more discoverability for apps with slightly narrower audiences, in the form of the "Apps Focus" section.

The first Apps Focus topic? Fashion and Style - bringing together a collection of some of the best apps for the chic-minded. While I can't say this one's up my alley in particular (seriously, what do I know about fashion?), I'm definitely interested in seeing where Google takes the Apps Focus feature in the future.

Screenshot_2012-09-14-15-30-36 Screenshot_2012-09-14-15-51-28 Screenshot_2012-09-14-15-31-07

I've long lamented the state of app discoverability on Android, especially when it comes to stuff literally hundreds of thousands of people haven't downloaded already. The Play Store remains inundated with many apps of debatable value, and curation obviously isn't an option with the open model - so it takes more than a little patience to find good, new apps, especially ones that appeal to a more niche audience.

There doesn't appear to be any associated Play Store update with this new feature, just open the app up on your device and it should appear on the front page.

Congressman Proposes National Mobile Device Privacy Act In Response To Carrier IQ Snafu

Privacy on your mobile phone is kind of a big deal. And a company named Carrier IQ made it an even bigger one about a year ago by getting all up in a bunch of people's business. If you don't remember the Carrier IQ debacle of last winter, let me give you a rundown.

First, a guy named TrevE figured out that a company called Carrier IQ had its software installed on a bunch of phones, and that it was taking a lot of data from those phones. Like, scary amounts. And all that data went back to Carrier IQ, who then passed on some of it to the carriers.

Then, Carrier IQ basically denied this was happening. It was complicated. Then they kind-of-sort-of decided it actually was happening (sometimes), but that it wasn't really their fault.

And then, they sued TreE, over some bogus copyright infringement allegation. Two days later, Carrier IQ decided that was actually not a very good idea, and dropped the lawsuit.

The end result of this was a truly epic PR disaster for the company, a mass-exodus of its major clients, and even statements by non-clients attempting to distance themselves from the whole debacle. This all really upset Al Franken, too. The public reaction, though, can best be summed up in this video:

So, a guy (congressman, whatever) by name of Edward Markey (D-MA) decided that this probably shouldn't happen again, and introduced a bill in the US House of Representatives today called the Mobile Device Privacy Act.

The gist is this: if your phone comes with tracking software, it needs to tell you that from the moment you turn it on. Then, it needs to give you an option to opt-out of that tracking. It also needs to tell you what it's tracking, who gets the information, and how it will or might be used. Anyone collecting mobile device data would have to keep tabs with the FTC and FCC on exactly what sort of tracking they're doing, and both agencies would gain new authority to enforce these rules (probably through fines).

Will it pass? That's pretty hard to say. The mobile industry (carriers, in particular) is vehemently opposed to such a bill, as tracking software allows them to collect information about coverage, quality of service, and regional demand - all extremely important in planning network rollouts, or identifying trouble spots. Handset makers collect data about usage, bugs, and various other stats, as well. This bill would give users a choice in deciding whether or not they want these companies getting such data, so they're going to fight it tooth and nail.

We'll doubtless see how this plays out in the next few months, but don't be surprised if the bill gets stuck in committee - lobbying money has a funny habit of finding its way into policy discussions.

Google On Acer's Canceled Phone Launch: 'Non-Compatible Versions Of Android, Like Aliyun, Weaken The Ecosystem'

Last night, we reported on some pretty strange rumors concerning an Acer product launch set to take place Thursday in Shanghai. The rumor was that Google had put its foot down over Acer's announcement of an Aliyun-powered smartphone, and threatened to "terminate all android-related cooperation" with the Taiwanese manufacturer should it proceed with the CloudMobile A800's introduction.

In case you missed the story, Aliyun is an OS developed by Alibaba Group, China's largest Internet firm by transactions. The OS, while not explicitly marked as an Android fork, is pretty closely related to the original platform. The OS boasts a reliance on cloud storage, and can even run Android apps using a "virtual machine."

Today, looking to clear the air, Google released a statement on the issue, indicating that yes, the search giant had put its foot down. The reason? Acer is a member of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of manufacturers and other firms with the shared goal of "developing open standards for mobile devices." Citing this alliance, Google plainly stated that "non-compatible version of Android, like Aliyun, weaken the ecosystem." Here's the full statement:

Compatibility is at the heart of the Android ecosystem and ensures a consistent experience for developers, manufacturers and consumers. Non-compatible versions of Android, like Aliyun, weaken the ecosystem. All members of the Open Handset Alliance have committed to building one Android platform and to not ship non-compatible Android devices. This does not however, keep OHA members from participating in competing ecosystems.

So what does this mean? Basically, Alibaba's estimation of the situation was right on the money – Google is essentially saying that if you're a member of the Open Handset Alliance and you want to keep getting early access to the platform along with access to Google Apps, you'd better not release a device with a "non-compatible" (forked or unapproved) version of Android. In a post to the official Android blog, Andy Rubin backs up this explanation:

While Android remains free for anyone to use as they would like, only Android compatible devices benefit from the full Android ecosystem. By joining the Open Handset Alliance, each member contributes to and builds one Android platform -- not a bunch of incompatible versions.

The post also explains in detail just what it means to be "incompatible":

When we first contemplated Android and formed the Open Handset Alliance, we wanted to create an open virtuous cycle where all members of the ecosystem would benefit. We thought hard about what types of external factors could intervene to weaken the ecosystem as a whole. One important external factor we knew could do this was INCOMPATIBILITIES between implementations of Android. Let me explain:
Imagine a hypothetical situation where the platform on each phone sold was just a little bit different. Different enough where Google Maps would run normally on one phone but run terribly slow on another. Let's say, for sake of example, that Android implemented an API that put the phone to sleep for a fraction of a second to conserve battery life when nothing was moving on the screen. The API prototype for such a function might look like SystemClock.sleep(millis) where the parameter "millis" is the number of milliseconds to put the device to sleep for.
If one phone manufacturer implemented SystemClock.sleep() incorrectly, and interpreted the parameter as Seconds instead of Milliseconds, the phone would be put to sleep a thousand times longer than intended! This manufacturer’s phone would have a terrible time running Google Maps. If apps don’t run well across devices due to incompatibilities, consumers would leave the ecosystem, followed by developers. The end of the virtuous cycle.

Of course, members like Lenovo and Motorola have shipped products running OPhone OS in China with little or no reaction. There's no doubt that Google's reaction in this instance is unique, and it may indicate that the Mountain View giant is taking a harder stance regarding OHA do's and don'ts.

Missing the point, Alibaba's VP John Spelich rebutted "Aliyun OS is not part of the Android ecosystem so of course Aliyun OS is not and does not have to be compatible with Android," adding "It is ironic that a company that talks freely about openness is espousing a closed ecosystem."

Given that Google has more or less confirmed some of the speculation surrounding last night's story, it will be interesting to see how Acer reacts, particularly because the manufacturer has already stated that it plans to continue working with Aliyun, releasing phones running the OS this year and next.
