Sony, Discovery and IMAX launch 3net Studios to produce in-house 3D content

3NET - THE 24/7 3D NETWORK FROM SONY, DISCOVERY AND IMAX – ANNOUNCES THE FORMATION OF 3NET STUDIOS

-- Global Production Arm Brings Together Worldwide Creative Production and Sales Teams To Develop Native 3D and 4K Content for Platforms and Partners Worldwide --

October 16, 2012 – Culver City, Calif – 3net, the joint venture from Sony, Discovery and IMAX – has formed 3net Studios, a new global television program production and distribution division, it was announced today by Tom Cosgrove, President and CEO, 3net. 3net Studios - based at both Sony Pictures headquarters in Los Angeles, CA and Discovery Communications headquarters in Silver Spring, MD - employs a worldwide team of creative personnel, utilizing the world-class technology and production expertise of the parent company's joint venture partners to produce the highest quality native 3D content available. Additionally, the studio will be employing a revolutionary production strategy, whereas select projects will be completed in native 3D 4K, 2D 4K, 3D 2K and both 3D/2D HD formats - effectively providing a global suite of content solutions for both current and future entertainment platforms and partners worldwide.

"From television, mobile, computer and tablet companies, to broadcast channels and digital content providers, the global demand for a high quality, native 3D programming pipeline has quickly become one of the most vital elements within the 3D ecosystem," said Cosgrove. "With the industry now struggling to keep pace with the rapidly accelerating consumer demand for 3D programming across multiple platforms – and now with the evolution of 4K - the formation of a world class production studio to help fill both the 3D and ultra high definition content voids became a logical next step in our evolution as a global player in the entertainment arena."

3net, which has been actively producing native 3D content for several years and launched the first fully-programmed 24/7 3D television network in the United States in early 2011, has amassed the world's largest and most diverse library of native, original 3D programming. The formation of 3net Studios will allow the company to further build upon the award-winning library that fuels its flagship 3net channel service in the United States, while also offering existing and new partners around the world a vibrant, top quality 3D and 4K content source. The studio will offer original, native 3D and 4K long form and short form content across a diverse spectrum of programming genres. The first slate of projects the company is producing under the 3net Studios banner will be announced in the coming weeks.

Gertboard extender for Raspberry Pi ships to advanced tinkerers

By Jon Fingas posted Oct 17th 2012 3:58AM Gertboard extender for Raspberry Pi ships to advanced tinkerers video

If a seemingly infinitely programmable mini computer like the Raspberry Pi is just too... limiting, we've got good news: the Gertboard extender has started shipping. The $48 companion board reaching customers' doorsteps converts analog to digital and back for Raspberry Pi fans developing home automation, robotics and just about anything else that needs a translation between the computing world and less intelligent objects. The one catch, as you'd sometimes expect from a homebrew project, is the need for some assembly -- you'll have to solder together Gert van Loo's Arduino-controlled invention on your own. We imagine the DIY crowd won't mind, though, as long as they can find the fast-selling Gertboard in the first place.

Nissan to offer steer-by-wire systems in some Infiniti cars

By Terrence O'Brien posted Oct 17th 2012 11:40AM Nissan to offer steerbywire systems in some Infinity cars

We're all at least somewhat familiar with fly-by-wire, the electronic piloting system found in most modern planes. Nissan wants to bring the same tech to cars, leaving behind the purely mechanical solutions currently used to take turns in your four-wheeler. The first automobiles to come equipped with steer-by-wire would be luxury sedans from Infiniti. Other companies have incorporated the tech into concept vehicles, but Nissan would be the first to stick it in a production model. The company plans to have the first drive-by-wire cars in consumer garages by the end of next year, with an eye towards a future in which you drive from the back seat using a joystick. Of course, the lack of direct feedback as your tires turn over the road may lead some to cling tight to their mechanical steering apparatus, though, moving to a digital steering system should lead to better handling vehicles.

Colombia to start testing 700MHz LTE, joins a Latin American trend in 4G

By Jon Fingas posted Oct 17th 2012 12:31PM Colombia to start testing 700MHz LTE, joins a Latin American trend in 4G

Those in the US can brag about having the range, indoor friendliness and other advantages of 700MHz LTE, but few other countries have that edge so far: Latin Americans who have any LTE at all usually have to contend with less tolerant 2.6GHz bands. Colombia isn't happy with that state of affairs, and its National Spectrum Agency is spearheading a rapidly growing 4G movement in the region by testing 700MHz LTE between the fall and winter. Its strategy echoes proposals from Brazil and Mexico that will use the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity band plan, providing more efficient airwaves as well as wider device and network coverage. It will take beyond early 2013 before Colombia and its neighbors are actively using 700MHz bands -- the digital TV transition is one of the bigger obstacles -- but there's desires for a fast-track spectrum handout that could bring blazing speeds to Bogota before too long.

This is the Modem World: It's my movie

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

DNP This is the Modem World It's My Movie

"No worries, we can watch this movie on my iPad on the plane," I announced with confidence.

"Oh really? Cool. Let's do that!" she replied, proud of her little nerdy man.

Yup. I was cool. I was going to rip a DVD that we just bought to watch on my iPad on a long flight to Korea. How amazed would she be when that movie so easily pops up on the Retina display as we ease into complimentary wine and processed air for a good 13 hours!

And then I tried to actually complete the task of getting a movie from a DVD to an iPad.

First, before I complain and you all revoke my nerd cred, a couple disclaimers. Yes, I own the DVD.

Second, to the hardcore, I have ripped DVDs in the past. I know how it's done.

But that's just the thing: In all this time (DVDs were introduced in 1995), it hasn't become any easier to import and use the digital video files that come on these discs. And don't get me started on Blu-ray.

I knew to use Handbrake, so I downloaded the latest presets and whatnot. I then inserted the DVD, found the disc's video directory and told Handbrake to grab the file. A seedy-looking dialogue window popped up telling me that Handbrake wasn't about to rip a copyrighted DVD. That is, unless I went and downloaded some file from the back alleys of the internet which it happily directed me to. Feeling like a criminal for wanting to watch the movie that I just bought on the device that I owned, I followed the instructions like a druggie meeting a pusher on a corner and downloaded the necessary extension.

Contraband installed, I clicked "start," half-looking over my shoulder and wondering if I was about to be logged as a data thief in some secret FBI file. Without issue, the ripping process started and I sulked away to pour a cup of coffee and contemplate what I'd do on my vacation -- or in jail, depending on how this ripping process went.

Ten minutes later, Handbrake signaled that it was done.

"This doesn't seem right. That's a 90-minute movie," I thought.

Sure enough, the ripping process timed out at about nine minutes. Those nine minutes looked -- and sounded -- beautiful, but my soon-to-be wife wouldn't be too impressed on the plane with such a short clip.

Had I been stopped by some external force? Were the nine minutes of illicit material enough to lock me up? Had I downloaded a bait file that reported me directly to the MPAA?

So now I get to peek under the hood and figure out why the rip failed. I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that I shouldn't be doing this because I am -- according to the law -- doing something wrong. What I should be doing, of course, is buying a digital copy of the movie or bringing the DVD that I paid for with me to play on a portable player or laptop, both of which sound not so fun.

It doesn't have to be this way.

Sure, I know there are gajillions of terrible people who download movies they didn't pay for. I also know there are actors and producers who aren't getting paid as much as they could for their hard work.

As a writer, I respect the right to be paid for one's work.

But here's the thing: I do get paid. Once I sell my work, anyone can come see it. I don't expect payment based on how many people read my articles. Of course, Hollywood is a very different beast: contracts are written, for the most part, based on how much a movie sells. If people grab the movie illegally and don't pay for it, people aren't getting paid.

That model is broken now, though. Today, virtually every consumer has more than one screen: a television, smartphone, tablet and computer -- not to mention the big screen they may have seen the movie on in the first place. Sure, when we all had one TV and one VCR this wasn't a huge deal -- one tape was enough.

Let's get over this already. I'll bring the popcorn.

Aereo opens its streaming TV to Mac and Windows web browsers

By Jon Fingas posted Oct 17th 2012 9:40PM Aereo starts streaming TV to Mac and Windows web browsers

If you'd wanted to watch Aereo's unique antenna-to-internet TV streaming until today, you had to tune in from an iOS device or Roku box. That's not a lot of choice for placeshifting, is it? A fresh update to the company's streaming service has widened the choices considerably for New Yorkers to include all the major browsers on Macs and Windows PCs. As long as you're using a recent version of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera or Safari, you can catch up on Ion or Telemundo while you're checking email. About the only restrictions left are the continued lack of Android support and occasional lawsuits from traditionalist broadcasters.

Reuters: White House finds no evidence of spying by Huawei, feels unsafe anyway (update: White House denies)

By Sean Buckley posted Oct 17th 2012 7:57PM

Reuters: White House finds no evidence of spying by Huawei, feels unsafe anywayJust last week, a Congress committee associated Huawei with "credible allegations" of "bribery, corruption, discriminatory behavior and copyright infringement." The report, of course, was part of the Legislative branch's ongoing concern of the company's alleged threat to national security. Today Huawei may have finally caught a break from the US government, albeit a somewhat backhanded one: according to Reuters, a White House ordered review says that there is no evidence of spying on the Chinese company's part. The other side of the hand lands when the report cites exploitable vulnerabilities in Huawei hardware -- one person familiar with the White House review said it found the company's equipment "riddled with holes," and susceptible to hacking. Security complaints aside, the government's old spying concerns are still there. "China has the means, opportunity and motive to use telecommunications companies for malicious purposes," said the House Intelligence Committee's Dutch Ruppersberger, explaining to Reuters that both Huawei and ZTE has pinned their limited cooperation on restrictions from the local government. Even if Huawei hasn't been caught spying, it's still something it could do -- and that's reason enough, it seems, for the US government to avoid doing business with the firm.

Update: White House spokesperson Caitlin Hayden told The Hill that no such investigation has been made, stating: "The White House has not conducted any classified inquiry that resulted in clearing any telecom equipment buyer as reported in Reuters," recalling the US government's exclusion of Huawei in the planning for America's interoperable wireless emergency network.

With 2nd Commercial Market Launch in its Cricket Las Vegas Market

SAN DIEGO – October 17, 2012 – Leap Wireless International, Inc. (NASDAQ: LEAP), today announced the launch of 4G LTE service in its Cricket Las Vegas market. This introduction marks the second Cricket market launch in the Company's planned, multi-year introduction of 4G LTE technology for smartphones to its customers. The Company initially launched its LTE service in its Tucson, Ariz. market in December, 2011.

"The introduction of Cricket 4G LTE in Las Vegas is another milestone in our transition to LTE as we continue to offer our customers high-quality products and services with the latest technology and the value they've come to expect," said Doug Hutcheson, president and CEO of Leap. "We expect to launch LTE service in additional Cricket markets in 2012 and cover approximately 21 million covered POPs by the end of the year. In addition, we expect to introduce several high-quality LTE smartphones before the end of the year that will be attractive to our value conscious customers."

Leap expects to offer 4G LTE service for smartphones across at least two-thirds of its network footprint over the next two to three years. The Company's 4G LTE rollout is a product of thoughtful spectrum management. The Company has kept spectrum unused in order to give it flexibility in steering a clear path to 4G LTE.

LTE is the fastest, most advanced network technology in America delivering data at incredibly fast speeds. In pre-launch speed tests conducted in the Las Vegas market, Cricket's 4G LTE speeds ranged from 3 to 15 times faster than current Cricket 3G data speeds, depending on market conditions. More than 80 percent of Cricket's Las Vegas market footprint will be covered by the new 4G LTE network.

At launch, 4G LTE service will be accessible via mobile broadband services and Cricket's newly-improved 4G LTE modem, the Huawei Boltz, will be available for $149.99 (MSRP) at Cricket's company-owned stores and dealers in Las Vegas and Tucson. Customers can select from four 4G LTE monthly data service plans ranging from $35 to $80 month depending on the users desired full-speed requirements.

Chameleon Android launcher hits version 1.1, adds support for native widgets

Chameleon Android launcher hits version 11, adds support for native widgets

It's not every day that we cover launchers of any kind, but when we heard the Kickstarter-funded Chameleon had been updated to version 1.1, we thought those of you who have supported the project since its early days would be happy to hear the news. And while the refresh itself doesn't bring many changes, it does include the long-awaited support for stock Android widgets -- not to mention a few welcomed improvements to the current Twitter, Google Calendar and YouTube homescreen-living apparatuses. Naturally, these will go hand to hand with those tweaks announced less than a month ago in version 1.0 of the tablet launcher. There's a video courtesy of Chameleon situated down below -- in case you're interested in seeing what all the fuss is about before you download the Android commodities.

Google toasts Dart's one-year anniversary with first stable SDK (video)

It's not a real birthday party without a present, so Google has just pulled the wraps off the first stable version of the Dart structured programming language, one year after it was launched. Along with "thousands" of bug fixes, the rejuvenated version will have a faster virtual machine, new JavaScript translator, HTML, server-side I/O and interoperable JavaScript libraries, the Pub package manager and Dartium, a Chromium build with native Dart support. Mountain view promised to keep the improvements coming "while maintaining backward compatibility" for the language, so if you feel frisky enough to jump JavaScript's ship, check the source below (or video after the break) to see how to grab it.

Intel roadmap reveals 10-core Xeon E5-2600 V2 Ivy Bridge CPU

By Mark Hearn posted Oct 17th 2012 9:04PM DNP Intel roadmap outs ten core Xeon E52600 V2 ten core Ivy Bridge CPU

Intel may have recently spilled its Q3 guts for 2012, but we highly doubt that the chip maker planned on outing its forthcoming projects for next year. An alleged internal slide makes the claim that the silicon giant plans to introduce a 10-core Xeon E5-2600 V2 Ivy Bridge-EP CPU in the third quarter of 2013. Compatible with Socket R LGA 2011 motherboards, this brute will max out at 20 threads through HyperThreading. Packing 30MB of L3 cache, this unannounced Ivy Bridge supports up to 1866MHz of DDR3 system RAM. If these specifications have whet your appetite, the Xeon E5-2600 V2 is only the tip of the iceberg -- Chipzilla is said to also have a 12-core processor in the pipeline as well.

Forrester survey finds first ever decline in people 'using the internet,' but a changing notion of 'being online'

By Donald Melanson posted Oct 17th 2012 6:22PM Forrester survey finds changing notion of 'being online,' less of the old more of the new

A survey measuring people's internet use used to be a fairly simple thing. If you dialed up and logged onto CompuServe or AOL, you were "online" until you disconnected. Even in more recent years, you were "online" for as long as you were looking at a web browser or a chat window. But things have gotten more complicated as we've grown more mobile and connected than ever, and that's now resulted in the first ever decline of people "using the internet" in Forrester's annual survey since it began asking the question in 1997. As AllThingsD reports, this year's survey found that people spent an average of 19.6 hours per week using the internet, compared to 21.9 hours in 2011. According to Forrester's Gina Sverdlov, however, that's not due to a shift back towards TV or other activities, but to a changing notion of what "being online" means to individuals. As she puts it, "given the various types of connected devices that US consumers own, many people are connected and logged on (automatically) at all times," and that "the internet has become such a normal part of their lives that consumers don't register that they are using the internet when they're on Facebook, for example." The full report isn't available to the public, but you can find a few more details from it at the links below.

Don't call it a GIF: Lightt is an app that lets you upload silent, looping clips for your friends to comment on

Don't call it a GIF: Lightt is an app that lets you upload silent, looping clips for your friends to comment on

Technically speaking, it would be incorrect to call Lightt the Instagram for GIFs, but really, it's tough to explain it any other way. In short, it's a new app for iOS which captures short, soundless clips that play back in an endless loop. (See? Looks like a GIF and is mesmerizing like a GIF, except it's actually a proprietary file format.) Once you record a clip, or "Highlight," you can upload as many as you want, and then share them to either Twitter or Facebook. (Careful: the default privacy setting is public.) Then, once you offload those segments onto the company's servers, people can like them or leave comments. Similarly, too, anyone with a browser can see your feed, though you also have the option of viewing people's images from within the app itself. The Insta-comparisons end there, though: with Lightt, you can't run your clips through any sort of artsy filters.

As with other social networks, you can follow users you find intriguing. There's also a "Featured" list, curated by Lightt, but you can't currently search for things based on tags, which is how you might discover cool stuff on other sites, like Tumblr or Pinterest. There's an element of randomness, then, when it comes to unearthing new things, though you can at least find friends on the site by importing your contacts from other services. Interestingly, too, all your images live online: even when you view your feed on your phone, the app is simply pulling it in from the web. Still, if you really like something, you can save a still frame to your device. The app is available now for free in the App Store (no word on if it'll ever come to other platforms), and we've also got a gallery of screenshots at the ready below.

Google introduces Maps Tracks and Geolocation APIs, awaits your next location-enabled application

By Darren Murph posted Oct 17th 2012 11:27AM Google introduces Maps Tracks and Geolocation APIs, awaits your next locationenabled application

In its never-ending quest to dominate the global mapping scene, Google has just rolled out a new pair of APIs designed to help organizations build their own location-enabled applications. The first is Google Maps Tracks API, which gives developers the ability to concoct apps that can store, display and analyze GPS data on a map. In other words, those in need of a geofencing program -- fleet managers and the like -- need look no further. Secondly, there's the Google Maps Geolocation API, which "enables an application or device to determine its own location without the use of GPS by looking up the locations of nearby WiFi access points and cell towers." It's pretty clear that enterprises are the target here, but it seems like only a matter of time before consumer-facing location apps tap into 'em. After all, the world needs more indoor mall apps. Fact.

Available in the coming months, the Galaxy S III update offers the latest Android™ platform; new camera, video and customization enhancements; and access to ESPN's ScoreCenter app with custom AllShare® integration

DALLAS - October 17, 2012 - Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC (Samsung Mobile) – the No.1 mobile phone provider in the United States and a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the No. 1 smartphone provider worldwide1 – continues its commitment to bringing the latest innovation to market with the rollout of Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, the latest version of the world's most popular smartphone operating system, to all Galaxy S III smartphones in the U.S. in the coming months.

The update will be made available both over the air and as a download via Kies, Samsung's content sync and software update solution. The specific timing and update method will be announced by each carrier partner, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and U.S. Cellular.

Galaxy S III owners will receive the Jelly Bean update as well as a host of new and enhanced TouchWiz features, making it a faster, richer and more responsive device experience. Samsung's best-selling flagship smartphone just got even better.

Samsung refined and enhanced the Galaxy S III experience by adding new capabilities to the camera, video and user interface, including:
· Camera Enhancements:
o New live camera and camcorder filters offer a range of new ways to spark your creativity. Warm vintage, cold vintage, black and white, sepia, color highlights (blue, green, red/yellow), and many more are selectable from the main camera screen.
o Pause and resume while recording video allows users to string together multiple captured video clips from a party, birthday or sporting event into a single file with no post editing required.
o Low light photo mode takes advantage of Galaxy S III's best-in-class High Dynamic Range (HDR) capabilities and offers an optimized mode for low light and indoor photos.
· Pop Up Play Update: Users can now easily resize or pause the Pop Up Play picture-in-picture video window, taking full advantage of the Galaxy S III's powerful processor and large 4.8-inch screen.
· Easy Mode: Easy Mode is a simplified user experience option for first-time smartphone owners, providing large home screen widgets that focus on the device essentials. The Easy widgets include both 4x2 and 4x4 arrangements of favorite contacts, favorite apps, favorite settings, clock and alarm.
· Blocking Mode: Galaxy S III owners can disable incoming calls, notifications, alarms and LED indicators for a designated period of time.
· Improved Usability: Users now have multiple keyboard options with the addition of the Swype® keyboard.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean offers users a smoother, faster and more fluid experience with expanded feature functionality, including:

· Google Now™: Google Now gives users the right information at the right time, like how much traffic to expect before leaving work, when the next train is scheduled to arrive at the subway station or the score of a favorite team's current game – conveniently delivered as notifications. Additionally, Google Now provides powerful voice assistant functionality across a range of domains, including weather, maps, navigation, search, image search, flight status and more. Google Now can conveniently be launched from the lock screen shortcut or by a long press on the menu button from any screen.
· Rich Notifications: Notifications can now expand and shrink with a pinch to show the right amount of information a user needs. Notifications have been enhanced so action can be taken without having to launch the app first – like sharing a screenshot directly from the notification.
· Automatic Widget Adjustment: Customizing the home screen is easier than ever before. Users can simply place a new icon or widget on the screen, and existing icons will move out of the way to make space. When widgets are too big, they automatically resize to fit on the screen.

In addition to the operating system update, Samsung and ESPN worked together to integrate AllShare® technology into ESPN's popular ScoreCenter® application. This means Galaxy S III owners will now be able to wirelessly push on-demand ESPN global sports coverage and highlights from the ESPN ScoreCenter app to their Samsung SMART TV™. When on the same Wi-Fi network as a Samsung SMART TV, a sharing icon will appear within the ScoreCenter video player which allows users to seamlessly push what they are watching to the TV. The ScoreCenter app with AllShare integration is available today for download through S Suggest™ on all U.S. Galaxy S III devices.

With the Jelly Bean update, the Galaxy S III will also add support for some exciting new accessory experiences.
· AllShare® Cast Wireless Hub: The AllShare Cast Wireless Hub accessory allows users to wirelessly mirror their phone screen to any HDTV or HDMI® display. Whether it's sharing pictures, browsing the Web, playing games, streaming music, watching videos or projecting business presentations, users can control the action on the big screen wirelessly from their smartphone. AllShare Cast Wireless Hub even supports licensed content playback of premium TV and movies.
· NFC One Touch Pairing Support: Galaxy S III can now pair with supporting NFC Bluetooth® accessories in a single touch. The Samsung Galaxy HM3300 Bluetooth headset will be the first Samsung portfolio accessory to support this functionality (available in the near future), allowing users to pair their headset by touching it to the back of their device.

Visualized: Space shuttle Endeavour goes on a crosstown journey through LA streets

By Nicole Lee posted Oct 17th 2012 3:25AM Image

The space shuttle Endeavour finally bid adieu to its fans in Southern California last weekend, not in the air, but on city streets. The L.A. Times captured this remarkable feat in a time-lapse video, and it's quite a sight to see the orbiter sailing past suburban houses and fast food drive-thrus. Along its 12-mile crosstown trip from LAX to the California Science Center in Exposition Park, the shuttle atop a special transporter had to maneuver past trees, utility poles and of course hundreds of enthralled residents. This came weeks after it made its farewell tour over the California coast perched on a Boeing 747. Take a peek at the Endeavour's final fascinating journey at the source.

Former Nokia Money crew kicks off iKaaz mobile payments, lets shops go with or without NFC

Ex-Nokia Money Team Launches iKaaz Tap & Pay Mobile Payments Platform for Enterprises

BANGALORE, October 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

iKaaz, a Bangalore-based mobile payments solution provider, launched its new iKaaz mobile payment platform for enterprises (you can view the product launch event video at http://www.ikaaz.com). The iKaaz platform broadly caters to two major segments.

The iKaaz Consumer Wallet for Enterprises allows enterprises including banks, operators and merchants to offer the convenience of mobile wallets to their customers for quick and easy payments. Soma Sundaram, Founder and CEO of iKaaz said, "The iKaaz solution can be delivered in the form of a mobile app across all types of mobile phones, as well as through SMS and USSD channels for lower-end phones that do not support apps. With the iKaaz app, account holders of a bank or prepaid can initiate money transfers and merchant transactions, customers can pay bills and subscribers of mobile / DTH service providers can recharge their accounts with just their mobile phones."

The iKaaz M-POS solution allows merchants to replace expensive POS equipment with just a mobile phone that settles payments electronically. With the iKaaz Tap & Pay solution, that leverages NFC (near field communication) technology, merchants can receive payments from customers with just a tap of a phone at the checkout terminal. This revolutionary concept aims to change the way shoppers go about their daily shopping at their favourite retail outlet. No more fumbling for cash or swiping of the card. A simple tap of a phone will complete the payment. "On one hand, customers can transform their mobile phones into a mobile wallet using a smart iKaaz NFC tag and complete payments faster at merchant locations. On the other hand, merchants can benefit by significantly reducing the transaction processing fees typically paid for conventional settlements," said Soma Sundaram.

A123 Systems becomes America's latest EV battery maker to file for bankruptcy

A123 Systems Reaches Agreement to Sell Automotive Business Assets To Johnson Controls

A123 and its U.S. Subsidiaries File Voluntary Chapter 11 Petitions To Facilitate Transaction

Process Johnson Controls to Provide $72.5 Million in DIP Financing To Support A123's Continued Operations

A123 Actively Pursuing Strategic Alternatives for Grid, Commercial, Government and other Businesses and Operations

WALTHAM, Mass.-October 16, 2012-A123 Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: AONE) ("A123" or "the Company"), a developer and manufacturer of advanced Nanophosphate® lithium iron phosphate batteries and systems, today announced that it has entered into an asset purchase agreement with Johnson Controls, Inc. (NYSE: JCI) in a transaction valued at $125 million. Under the terms of the agreement, Johnson Controls plans to acquire A123's automotive business assets, including all of its automotive technology, products and customer contracts; its facilities in Livonia and Romulus, Michigan; its cathode powder manufacturing facilities in China, and A123's equity interest in Shanghai Advanced Traction Battery Systems Co., A123's joint venture with Shanghai Automotive. The asset purchase agreement also includes provisions through which Johnson Controls intends to license back to A123 certain technology for its grid, commercial and government businesses. A123 also continues to engage in active discussions regarding strategic alternatives for its grid, commercial, government and other operations, and has received several indications of interest for these businesses.

To facilitate the transaction process, A123 and all of its U.S. subsidiaries today filed voluntary petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The Company's subsidiaries located outside the U.S. were not included in the filings. This action is expected to allow the Company to provide for an orderly sale of the automotive business assets and all other assets and business units under Section 363 of the Bankruptcy Code and enable the Company to maximize the value of its assets for its stakeholders in a controlled, court-supervised environment.

In conjunction with the proposed transaction, A123 has received a commitment from Johnson Controls for $72.5 million in "debtor in possession" financing to support the Company's continued operations during the pendency of the sale process. The Company has filed a number of customary motions seeking court authorization to continue to support its business operations during the transaction process, including the continued payment of employee wages, salaries and health benefits without interruption.

"We believe the asset purchase agreement with Johnson Controls, coupled with a Chapter 11 filing, is in the best interests of A123 and its stakeholders at this time," said David Vieau, Chief Executive Officer of A123. "We determined not to move forward with the previously announced Wanxiang agreement as a result of unanticipated and significant challenges to its completion. Since disclosing the Wanxiang agreement, we have simultaneously been evaluating contingencies, and we are pleased that Johnson Controls recognizes the inherent value of our automotive technology and automotive business assets. We are also pleased that we have received indications of interest that recognize the value of our grid and commercial businesses. We are encouraged by the significant interest we have received, as multiple parties have submitted proposals for these businesses. As we move through this transaction process, we expect to continue operating and working with customers and suppliers."

Micron's RealSSD P320h PCI Express SSD gets reviewed: wildly fast, but a little unstable

Micron's RealSSD P320h PCI Express SSD gets reviewed wildly fast, but a little unstable

"Taking one's sweet time" just took on an entirely new meaning. Well over a year after Micron first introduced its RealSSD P320h PCI Express SSD, the aforesaid device is finally hitting the general availability stage. And with that, the flood of reviews begins. What sets this guy apart right out of the box is its native stature; much like Fusion-io (and very unlike most all other rivals from OCZ, Intel, LSI, etc.), this thing sidesteps the mishmash of SATA / SAS controllers and opts for a direct-attached PCIe approach. At around $7,000, it's clearly aimed first at enterprise, but given Micron's history in the consumer space, one could assume that this kind of wizardry will eventually trickle down. The fine folks over at HotHardware found their tester to be shockingly quick, easily outpacing its rivals when it came to read and write performance. Unfortunately, the Windows drivers provided weren't exactly mature, which led to a few booting issues when swapping in varying motherboards. Of course, no one ever said the Ferrari of PCIe SSDs would purr without a bit of finagling. Hit up the links below for the full spiel.

Soon they'll be writing "Hi this is Niwaka Japan" in Morse code using intense flashes of LED light, first to Japan and then across the globe, starting next month. To catch them floating away from the International Space Station's cozy confines, hit the source.
